Welcome to the June MAPS supporters newsletter!

We'd like to start by thanking all our volunteer mentors for sharing your #WhyIVolunteer messages for Volunteers' Week 1-7 June. We've had lots of new enquiries from people you've inspired to become mentors so thank you for that!

We'd also like to share a mini Impact Report for 2020-2021 which was put together for Volunteers' Week. Read more...

We're delighted to welcome two new members of staff to the MAPS team. Here is a little bit about them:

"
I am really excited to have joined the MAPS team and be working for an organisation I care about and know makes a difference. When not working at MAPS I am either helping future brides create their dream wedding dress, on my yoga mat practicing or teaching yoga, gardening or getting crafty. My latest project is learning different dying techniques which so far hasn't gone quite to plan but has produced some interesting results. There's still so much to learn in life!!" Natalie Baum, MAPS Mentoring Coordinator

"I join VC Sutton/MAPS having just completed BSc Forensic Psychology and with 20 years' experience from the public sector.  I live in Sutton with my husband, two children and our energetic vizsla.  I like to run and practice yoga and I love outdoor adventures, cooking for friends and reading." Hayley Brooker, MAPS Mentoring Coordinator

Coronavirus Restrictions

It was recently announced that "freedom day" has been delayed until at least 19 July so we've included the roadmap and what it means for mentoring pairs below.

The good news is that whilst some restrictions remain in place, there are many more places opening up, which will give our mentoring pairs much more choice for where and how they meet for their weekly mentoring sessions. Read our last newsletter for info on local activities...

MAPS Activities

Last month we were finally able to run our first big group activity at Go Ape but it was worth the wait. So nice to see our mentoring pairs out for a tree top adventure, having fun and challenging themselves. They were all absolute superstars! Thanks to all our mentoring pairs who came and made the day such a success.
Feedback from one of our mentoring pairs shows why these types of activities are so important. One of our mentees was really brave, pushed himself really hard and on the way home told his mentor he felt really proud of himself. This made his mentor very happy as this young lad’s confidence is growing with every week they meet.

Next mash-up for mentoring pairs

Mentoring Moments

One of our matched pairs have just reached the end of their time together. They were matched just as lockdown started & began their relationship by phone, then video call & once allowed face to face. They ended their relationship on a grand day out to a Palace.
The last year hasn't been the best of times for our young person but her mentor stuck by her side throughout & a firm relationship was established. The young person gave her mentoring experience a 10/10 which makes the MAPS teams so happy. Our volunteer mentors are ace and just look at the lovely way they have described each other in the images below.
And finally, we have a new expenses claim form for volunteers which you can find on our website.

Thanks for reading!
