Involving Young People in Friends Groups and Greenspace

Young People in Cotteridge Park By Emma Woolf MBE, Vice Chair
The Friends of Cotteridge Park was set up in 1997 in response to a threat to “decommission” the park. The aim of the group is to care for and develop the park as a resource for the whole of the community. Young people are the future of our community; working with them to find ways to make the park their own is key to the work of the Friends of Cotteridge Park.

Our future hope for park management to include young people By Lydia Allen, Youth Work Specialist at the National Youth Agency
With the stricter lockdown restrictions of 2020, we discovered our local greenspaces and parks that before we might have walked through, but never truly valued. These spaces became places to escape, to forget, to clear our minds and to look at nature in a different way.  The Future Proof Parks programme a partnership initiative set out to engage young people in their local parks by connecting them to local Friends of Parks groups. There have been two parts to this programme.

Assets of Community Value: What, Why, How?

What are assets of community value? Does your Birmingham neighbourhood have a place that should be listed as one?

An ‘asset of community value’ (ACV) is a building or place that furthers the social wellbeing or social interests of its local community, now and in the future.

Under the Localism Act 2011, community groups and citizens can nominate certain local public or privately owned buildings (or land they feel is significant) for recognition as an ACV.

If the local authority accepts the nomination, the ACV will be included on a register of such assets for five years.

During this time, if the asset’s owner wishes to sell it, they must, with a number of limited exceptions, inform the local authority. In turn, the local authority will notify the local community of the proposed sale.
