Castle School library gets a boost thanks to pupils' efforts
As part of an enrichment day to engage pupils at Castle School in reading and listening activities, our children took part in a themed sponsored 'Ready, Steady, Listen" event in partnership with Usbourne Books.

For different amounts of money raised, it was agreed that Usbourne Books would provide us with a percentage top-up to help replenish our library and replace some of our more 'well loved' story books. In total, we raised an incredible £762.25 which qualified us for 60% additional funding, which now means we have £1219.20 to spend on books to develop our library resources!

The children had lots of fun taking part in activities based around their favourite books. Primary pupils enjoyed lots of circus-themed stories and fairy tales while in secondary, classrooms were transformed into a world of witchcraft and wizardry for their magical theme. A huge well done to everyone who took part!

New Reading Corner launched on Bishop's website
At Bishop’s Primary School, it’s our aim to instill a love of reading in all of our children from an early age. Reading for pleasure has soooooo many benefits for pupils' personal and academic development which is why it's our mission to make sure that all of our children are fluent, independent readers by the time they leave Year 2.

To support this vision, we've set up a brand new 'Reading Corner' on the Bishop's website where you can find book recommendations from staff and pupils as well as exciting news and activities linked to reading from across all five Bishop's campuses. Click the button below to check it out!

James Knott pupils' Race for Life raises over £3k for Cancer Research
Last week, we shared how pupils from Duke's Secondary School had raised an incredible £1,870 for Cancer Research UK by taking part in 'Race for Life Schools', this week, it was the turn of Bishop's James Knott Campus and wow oh wow, they've knocked it out of the park!

Pupils raised a staggering £2,532 which with the addition of Gift Aid, makes a total of £3,018.75! We are absolutely blown away by the generosity of our families, friends and supporters and would like to thank each and every person who donated for their kindness. The children are absolute superstars and we're delighted that their efforts have paid off!
Something old, something new, something borrowed, EVERYTHING blue!
NCEA Warkworth Primary needs your help! In last week's newsletter, we shared the news that the school has teamed up with local business, Cloud Dancer Photography, to work on a community art project to help bring the school vision "#Strive together as one" to life.

After a brainstorming session with the children, it has been agreed that the final piece of art work will include creating a giant image of Earth on the school field. To help make the 'oceans', we're looking for donations of anything and everything blue! From old towels and bed linen, to tarpaulins and old clothes, anything you've got in any shade of blue will do!

If you have anything you can donate, please contact marketing@ncea.org.uk to arrange drop-off at our Robert Stephenson Campus in Ashington, or contact Warkworth Primary directly

Roundnet comes to Duke's
On Wednesday, Year 7 students at Duke's completed their first session of Roundnet during lunchtime club with England player Rebecca Smith.

Hailing from the USA, Roundnet is like a 360 degree version of beach volleyball, but with a small circular net (like a trampoline) on the ground. The game is played in two teams of two, who have up to three touches to hit the ball on to the net. The play then changes possession to the other team, who have three touches to get it back.

We were very kindly gifted 6 sets of Roundnet equipment to use during the session, which proved a huge success, staff and students had a fantastic time! Look out for Roundnet in our curriculum and extra curricular provision from September.

CEO's blog: Should we extend the school day?

In last week’s blog, I wrote about the government’s decision to invest only 10% of the funding needed to implement the recommendations of Sir Kevan Collins, the Education Recovery Commissioner, on how schools can ‘catch up’ over the next few years.  A key question is how lost time for learning can be made up. One suggestion has been to extend the school day, perhaps making it 8am to 6pm for secondary schools. This is popular with many politicians but as recent surveys suggest, it is not so popular with parents with over 50% strongly against.

It’s easy to see why having a longer school day seems attractive. Despite the best efforts of schools and families, all pupils have experienced over a year of disrupted education. It seems logical to add more time to the school year by extending the school day, so that pupils can catch up on some of the work they’ve missed.

If we were to extend the school day, firstly there would be massive additional costs involved to employ all of the extra staff required to make this happen. This alone would take up the majority of the £15 billion cost of recovery identified in Sir Kevan’s report, but this isn’t even the main problem.

The key issue would be that if longer school days mean more teachers, where would they come from?
