On June 14th, UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced a delay in further lifting of the coronavirus lockdown restrictions from 21 June to 19 July - a four weeks extension on the original plan. The extension will help ensure the higher percentage of the population is fully vaccinated and the country can reopen safely.

City of York Council is supporting the creation of new apprenticeships in local businesses and charitable organisations via the Apprenticeship Levy Transfer Scheme. Businesses who recruit new apprentices, or expand on existing staff, can receive support through both this scheme and through government incentives.

A new Visit York website has launched this week with improved design and functionality to showcase the city’s activities, events and wide range of tourism businesses to over 115,000 online visitors to the platform each month. The new website was developed by the team at Make It York together with DestinationCore and supported by the Visit England grant. Find out more
Read the latest Make It York Cultural Case Study about Pilot Theatre. As part of the launch of York's Creative Future - funding was awarded to cultural organisations across the city including supporting Pilot Theatre's Happiness Project to create a creative wellbeing toolkit for LGBTQIA+ young people.

York Maze - a giant maize maze in York will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of Mr. Men Little Miss when it opens to the public on 17 July. Over 5 km of pathways was cut in a 15 acre field of over a million maize plants to form an image that can be viewed from the air. Visitors will have to navigate the maze to find the Mr. Men Little Miss characters. Businesses in York have come together to help the local bee population to thrive with York BID delivering the nation’s biggest bee-friendly floral display. Running until 30 September, 200 brand new planters in the city centre will give pollinator bees 'rest stops' so they can travel safely from green space to green space.

York Minster is inviting composers to write a new piece of music to celebrate the return of its Grand Organ. The Grand Organ Composers’ Competition is open to both amateur and professional musicians to submit a new work for solo organ. The winning entries will be premiered at the cathedral later this year during services for Advent and Christmas. Find out more
Castle Howard has launched a new premium quality gin in partnership with the local Sloemotion Distillery. Inspired by both the 8000acre estate and the ethos of the distillery, the Castle Howard Gin will use ingredients foraged from across the estate. The Castle Howard Gin can be purchased online.
