Youth Month

In Youth Month, we remember those who lost their lives in 1976 Soweto Youth Uprising. We also recognize rugby’s fallen heroes who are now recipients of the Players’ Fund, many who were also struck down in their youth. We reflect on the brave students who fought for their rights against an unjust education system - all whilst being mindful of continuing to pledge support to our recipients who despite their disability remain determined to empower themselves through obtaining and continuing their education. This is a humbling parallel indeed and one that we should all get behind.

On the international rugby playing fields, the long awaited British & Irish Lions will tour South Africa in July and August. With the wonderful memories of our Springbok winning the 2019 Rugby World Cup still firmly entrenched, let’s once again get behind our team and fly our countries flag high for what promises to be an amazing spectacle. Please read below about the two opposition countries charities’ collaboration.

Ollie’s Story

Two charities from apposing and fiercely competitive rugby nations join hands and collaborate during the British & Irish Lions Tour to SA

When a serious and disabling injury changes a life, the world can seem like a lonely place…the Matt Hampson Foundation in the UK and the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund (Players’ Fund) in South Africa strive to be the teams that share the journey, provide support, partner and encourage those whose lives have been changed to GET BUSY LIVING.

The two kindred institutions were brought together for the first time in 2010 when they stopped at nothing to safely reunite Hervé Iradakunda, a young teenager with his family in France after he was left paralysed and permanently dependent on a ventilator following a collision with a car alongside a field where he was playing touch rugby in Cape Town. Seven years later in 2015, their combined efforts got George Robinson back home to the UK after a disabling rugby injury in Cape Town whilst he was on school tour. With both unfortunate incidents the open communication, problem solving and perseverance from both organisations meant that the families were reunited and given invaluable support away from home.

The Matt Hampson Foundation has been recognised as one of the four chosen charities of the British & Irish Lions Trust for the 2021 tour to South Africa. The Players’ Fund is the official charity of the Springboks and this important collaboration between the two charities during the Lions Tour to SA aims to establish a lasting legacy. The relationship established by strong international rugby ties will create a positive change long after the final whistle is blown, and will continue to link the charities on their mission to make a difference to those who face life with disability

Farewell to Tori

It was a sad day at the end of May when we bid farewell to our Marketing Manager of 7 years – Tori Gardner. Tori joined our team in March 2014 and was an immediate “game changer” for the Players’ Fund. Her energy, creativity and work ethic soon elevated the Players’ Fund marketing and eventing arm to one that was to be a force to be reckoned with. Tori invested in people, she listened to and respected what everyone had to say and as a result built strong relationships with our 104 recipients, corporate funders, sponsors, banqueting teams and donors. Tori has taken up an exciting new opportunity as CEO of CoolPlay and is already sorely missed by staff, trustees, corporates and recipients alike.

Leave a gift in your will

If you care about our cause and would like to invest with us on the long term, please consider a bequest in your will – exempting it from estate duty.

How this works: Firstly, decide on what type of gift you would like to leave e.g.: money, a painting, a property or shares and, secondly ensure that you use the correct wording when drawing up or updating your will. Alternatively, you may decide to simply update your will using a codicil – examples of which can be found here: https://playersfund.org.za/get-involved/
