Tuesday, July 13 Mitchell Caverns in the Mojave Desert - 1:00pm via Zoom - The Mitchell Caverns is a trio of limestone caves located on the east side of the Providence Mountains in San Bernardino County, California. For many years the caves were thought to be "dead," that is, the formations were no longer growing. However, recent studies have found some signs of life. Numerous paleontological and archaeological finds have been made in and around the caverns. The caverns were a sacred place for the Chemehuevi Indians, and a number of tools and fire pits have been found. Our cave guide, California State Park Interpreter Andrew Fitzpatrick, will take us through a crash course in desert and cave ecology and local history of the Mitchell Caverns. Register for this free “day trip” by Tuesday, July 6 by calling the Carlisle COA 978-371-2895.
