Public User Access to ArcGIS Online Routing Services

Have you ever created an online routing or traffic service, shared it with the public but users are being told to login to ArcGIS Online in order to use that service?

In this article that we published this week on our website, we give you a detailed step by step guide as to how you can prevent the Login page from showing up to your users every time they want to use your location based applications.

Imagine how inconvenient and how annoying it can be for the end users. Do we have to tell our users to create ESRI accounts in order for them to get what they want?

The Solution:

  • Get the Original Service URL for the Service that you intend to use from the ArcGIS Service Documentation. (Traffic data, Routing or Service Area)

  • Add the Service to your Organizational account or Portal

  • Store your login credentials together with the service. (Storing credentials is the key the preventing the login form from appearing)

  • Limit the service URL usage (this prevents excessive usage of the ArcGIS Credits)

  • Make the Service public

  • Embed your URL in your applications

This is just an outline of how you can prevent the annoying login form for the users. You can read the more detailed version through our website. Just click the button below.

Open Source of Proprietary?

Have you just started an organization or are you looking forward to venture into software usage but are not sure which path to following between Open Source software and Proprietary software?

Here we are going be outlining the benefits of both. Our hope is that its going to help you decide.

Open Source

  • lower costs (pretty obvious isn’t)

  • abundant support

  • integrated management

  • simple license management

  • no vendor lock-in

  • high quality software

  • quickly scaled and consolidated

The costs are pretty obvious, they are very LOW. In some organizations you might realize that the Premium features are the least of your concern and can deal with the available goods at hand.

When we talk of Abundant Support we are basically talking about the large community that uses that software which is readily available to help you out. Take QGIS for example. A lot of Geospatial analysts and Cartographers out there are always contributing in platforms like GIS Stack-Exchange and helping each other out.

With Open-Source technology, you are free to integrate the system with any other software of your choice without any restricts just to suit your needs and requirements. Imagine integrating Spreadsheets with QGIS to easily add attributes to your data without having to perform Joins which might be a really long way. But that only comes when you have VERY GOOD developers ready to take up the task.

Proprietary

  • free to less bugs

  • professional help comes from the supplier

  • feature updates are usually available at a frequent rate

Haha! Yes No License = No ACCESS. Gotcha!

When we talk of BUGS we are not talking about those little insects that you see in your house, garden or in any place. We are talking of those annoying alerts and notifications of software malfunctioning. YES I bet you have seen those once too. How often have you seen software like ArcGIS producing unnecessary errors? Paid software is professionally maintained. Companies who develop these usually make sure they go to market with a perfect product for 99% of the community.

Support is the least of your concern when you are a fully paid up software user. Most companies are only a dial away. Face any challenges and they will take you through each step by step just to resolve your issue.

I will not talk about updates. You have probably seen or witnessed this especially if you are a Microsoft user.

With most proprietary software’s, these guys are usually tackling their competition so whatever they produce, it is always up to standard and well maintained. This is where we can get to leverage them as the users now.

PLEASE DO NOT CRACK SOFTWARE. JUST USE OPEN-SOURCE TECHNOLOGY IF YOU CANNOT AFFORD TO PAY FOR IT.

That’s all we had for you this week. Please do us a HUGE favor and also follow us on our Social Media pages. We would very much appreciate your love and support to keep us going.
