Give yourselves a pat on the back!

With this last CSL newsletter of the 2020-21 school year we wish to acknowledge the important work of school library professionals from coast to coast to coast. School library programs have endured unprecedented challenges during this pandemic school year and met them with professionalism and creativity.

Summer reading

We hope the long warm days of summer will help you to relax, heal and recharge with family and friends. When you are ready to reboot and you feel a thirst for some serious inspiration perhaps you would enjoy soaking up the work and ideas of colleagues.

Catch up on missed podcasts of Read Into This, such as the Power of Stories series hosted by Beth Lyons, Lisa Noble and Alanna King.

CSL JournalExplore current and past issues of Canadian School Libraries Journal. Don’t miss So Much More Than a Safe Space: Student Well-Being in the School Library. In this article, Brooks Kirkland addresses student well-being in the library learning commons, focusing on the critical need to expand our understanding of how to support the well-being of all students in an intentional and holistic way.  As she explores the issues and new ways of thinking about student well-being, you will be inspired by the many associated projects from Canada’s school libraries featured in the story. Along with a key reference list, the article highlights the CSL resource Culturally Relevant and Responsive School Library Learning Commons and the new theme in Leading Learning, Designing for Student Well Being in the LLC, which is now part of the standard, Designing Learning Environments to Support Participatory Learning.

Check out this guide to building a Virtual Library Learning Commons led by Professor David Loertscher. Does your library have a virtual space that has blossomed during the pandemic and is now even more important as we invent a new normal for patrons?

Virtual Library Guide

To help in this effort, sixty graduate students in the School of Information at San Jose State University have just published an expanded version of the Virtual Library Guide targeted at all types of libraries and librarians. This website includes many theoretical, practical ideas and practices, major free digital collections, tutorials, and connections to the best practices out there. We invite all librarians to examine, use, and encourage others to reach out to every possible patron group. You can find this site at: https://sites.google.com/view/virtual-library-guide/home

Looking Ahead:
