Dawson City Edition

Midnight Sun Flying Club

In Dawson, the land of the Midnight Sun, it’s legal to be in the air at Midnight. Take off from the Dome before midnight and land the following day to qualify and become a member of the Midnight Sun Flying Club.  Follow up your celebration by doing the Wingover Cocktail at the Downtown Hotel. You can have your name added to the prestigious webpage or order a T-Shirt at ayph.ca/projects/midnight-sun-flying-club

Several Yukon pilots are already in sunny Dawson where conditions have been epic.  More pilots are heading to Dawson this Solstice weekend and hopefully get to join the “Midnight Sun Flying Club”. Let’s have fun in the sun and remember to keep things safe. On that note, here is some information to entertain and educate. Solstice 2021 will be at 8:31 p.m. on Sunday, June 20. See you in Dawson this weekend. Note June 21 is a Stat Holiday in Yukon.

Klondike Launches

  1. Sunnydale - AYPH does not currently have permission to use the East Launch on TH land. We have a land use permit in process and hope that will be approved later this season. We ask that pilots respect that this land is TH land and we need their blessing to use it.
  2. South Launch - This is the best launch in Dawson and hopefully the south winds will be in our favour.  Please be courteous and cautious with the bikes, vehicles and tourists that frequent the Dome. It’s a shared space and on Solstice, expect it to be particularly busy and part of the celebrations. There was going to be a wedding on the Dome on Saturday, June 19th.  but that has been cancelled due to COVID.
  3. North Launch - This is not a beginner launch. While some work was done to improve the site this season and last, there are some advanced features to be cautious of.  The launch is shallow and any north wind with an east component should be avoided.  If you are not familiar with this site, please get an orientation beforehand. We recommend that only experienced pilots use this launch when the wind is coming straight in.
  4. Top of the World /  Tombstones have some great training, ground handling and ridge-soaring spots. Depending on wind, pilots may be heading to either location. Join the WhatsApp Yukon Paragliding thread for changes to where we are flying.

The Farmers Market will be running on Saturday, June 19th along one side of the landing zone and beside the gazebo. There is still room to land, but please be sure to come in high on your landing to set up a safe approach. The market is usually clear by about 5pm.  Remember that the landing zone in Dawson should be a standard aircraft approach over the river and clear the power lines with at least 100’. More info at  hpac.ca/pub/?pid=148
Wolf made CBC News! A video was posted on the CBC North FaceBook Page and already has 100 likes. Rumour is Wolf almost hit 10,000’
MacDonald Brothers
The McDonald Brothers completed a long awaited XC flight together climbing up to over 8400’ and both landing at the golf course. Congratulations and see you both in the air this weekend.

North Launch Site Visit

North Launch Site Visit Saturday, June 19th 10am - The AYPH Board invites all Dawson City AYPH members to visit the North Launch to hear suggestions and concerns for safety, maintenance and development of this launch. If this time is not possible for you please let an AYPH Board member know and we can try to meet at your convenience.
If you are coming to Dawson City to fly, the AYPH Board invites all pilots to join in a celebratory drink on Saturday Night at the Downtown Hotel. Of course, if it's flyable, many of us will be in the air.  “Wingover” Midnight Sun drink tickets courtesy of NVD with collaboration from AYPH were distributed to all AYPH Dawson members as well as board members. Please limit your use of the drink tickets to one per evening. They are valid for the summer season.  Accommodation discount coupons are also available. Ask an AYPH Board member  or Jerome Casanova (867) 335-9086
Congratulations Dave McDonald on making the front page of the Klondike Sun

Board Update

For personal reasons, Joel has stepped down from the AYPH board, but will still be involved in flying and helping out when he can. We would like to thank Joel for his enthusiasm, energy and contributions. Trevor Mead-Robins is now acting as AYPH President and Dave McDonald is now acting as Vice President.  The AYPH Board has appointed two new directors in order to fulfill our bylaw requirements. We would like to welcome Dale Brown and Martin Torres to the board. Dale is an industrial arts teacher and has five planes, including a glider, and has been out on numerous paragliding trips to help shuttle and volunteer. He’s also on the Yukon Transportation Museum and KSA Board. We welcome his expertise and experience. Martin is almost finished his P2 (has 30 flights), recently got his PR Status, and is now working at Mount Sima.  Denise continues with her role as secretary-treasurer and Wolf as Director. Those board members in new positions will be up for re-election at our next AGM. Contact details at ayph.ca/ayph/ayph-board

Mount Sima Update

The power lines beside the landing zone will not be connected until next year. There is a local wood fuel company that will be clearing the landing zone once the permits are in place. We have received the letter or permission from the GM at Mount Sima and are presently working with EMR and the COW for the required permits.
Sima Bike Nights starts Wednesday, June 30th, and will be open every Wednesday and every second Saturday, until August 25th.  Martin Torres is now working at Mount Sima and as a new member of AYPH Board, will work to build opportunities between Sima and AYPH.  Bike night Tickets are $35 each for a 3-hour slot, however, Sima has made the following possible for insured pilots to fly at Sima this summer. A Fly Pass will be $25 and will be for the ENTIRE time the lift is spinning. Wednesdays 3-9pm and Saturdays (Starting July 3rd) 12-6pm. Paragliding pilots can purchase a ticket on that day at Guest Services, even if bike passes are sold out (assuming there are no changes due to COVID). Because we can take chairs up the lift that bikers do not use you don’t need to wait in the bike line.  A reminder that pilots MUST be in the air 30-20 min before lift closes. When you purchase your ticket Guest Services needs to confirm they have the pilot information on file, and have signed the paragliding policy and current waiver. Tandem passengers need to pay the $25 lift fee.  We are also working on off-hours access for AYPH members and possibly a season fly-pass, but we need to develop an MOU with Sima first. I would like to commend Sam, the Sima GM and the Sima team for making this possible.
