Write Postcards to VOTE NO on the Recall
A recall election seeking to remove California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) will take place on September 14, 2021.
Recall supporters said Newsom mishandled the state's response to the coronavirus pandemic, did not do enough to address the state's homelessness rate, and supported sanctuary city policies and water rationing. In a March 2021 email, Newsom called the effort a "Republican recall — backed by the RNC, anti-mask and anti-vax extremists, and pro-Trump forces who want to overturn the last election and have opposed much of what we have done to fight the pandemic."
The recall election will present voters with two questions. The first will ask whether Newsom should be recalled from the office of governor. The second will ask who should succeed Newsom if he is recalled. A majority vote is required on the first question for the governor to be recalled. The candidate with the most votes on the second question would win the election, no majority required. In the 2003 recall of Gray Davis, 135 candidates ran and the winner received 48.58 percent of the vote.
Orrin Heatlie began this recall campaign on June 10, 2020. It is the fifth of six recall petitions filed against Newsom since 2019. The other five recall campaigns were inactive as of Feb. 3, 2021.

The work continues in California. The 2020 election has brought about a recall effort for Governor Gavin Newsom, his sixth one to date.
Governor Gavin Newsom is working hard to keep our families safe, distribute COVID-19 vaccines, protect families from eviction, and provide billions in direct relief to individuals and struggling small businesses.
Women's rights and representation are at stake IF Governor Newsom is recalled. Here are a few ways Governor Newsom and his administration have supported women:
- In 2019, the Administration announced expansions in the California Earned Income Tax Credit and paid family leave, increases in affordable childcare, and a repeal of the taxes on diapers and tampon products.
- #EqualPayCA is a partnership that was formed to turn the strongest equal pay laws in the nation into the smallest pay gap in the nation.
- In January 2020, the First Partner co-founded The California Partners Project, an organization focused on increasing women's representation in leadership in California and ensuring that our state's media and technology industries are a force for good in the lives of all children.
