  ASCOT KAYAK CLUB
        NEWSLETTER

From Monday 12th July to 25th July our lovely Kylie is on holidays. It has been a long while since she has had a break and hopefully has a chance to relax before the start of another busy period. Kylie, thanks for everything you do to keep us all happy.

Beck, our hard working treasurer will be manning the AKC phone over the two weeks for any urgent queries. If your query can wait for a couple of weeks send an email to akcadministration@gmail.com and Kylie will respond as soon as she is back at work.

Bring and Buy Day

Thanks to everyone who turned up to the inaugural Ascot Bring and Buy. A few boats went home on different cars than they arrived on.

To Sharna and her incredible team who helped set up, man the bric a brac and anything else that was required, a huge thank you.

From the AKC junior crew, thanks very much for your donations for the junior para athletes.

The Ascot Paddle Passport (APPs) is the introductory 4 week course AKC runs for juniors and this will help the junior parathletes feel comfortable.

The coaching crew were raising money for two high backed seats and a dedicated boat that can be adapted to be fitted for extra support when needed. The high backed seats can also be used for the adult paracanoe programme.

The cake stall raised $434 and the bric a brac $603. We can’t thank you enough - it means a lot to the junior coaching crew, seeing paddlers have success on the water.

Thanks Kathy for donating $1 from every coffee sold to our junior program.

AKC also received a donation of a K1 with an outrigger adaption for stability suitable for the para athletes from Des and Lyn Cobbledick.

The support for this programme has been overwhelming and if you know anyone who would like to learn to kayak please spread the word.

Thank you

A heartfelt thanks to AKC members Alan Moreby, Vince Linardi, Steven Chin and John Breed for their help in taking care of Chris Bagshaw when he got into trouble with suspected heart troubles, downstream of Tonkin Hwy last Thursday. Your actions are to be commended under very stressful circumstances.

Our thanks goes out to Mandy O'Brien who passed by on her bike, stopped to see if she could help out and the guys were able to borrow her phone.
We have been advised that Chris is going to be okay and is in RPH recovering.
We wish you a speedy recovery Chris 💐 and hope to see you back on the water soon.

It's a timely reminder to paddle with a buddy, at all times and if you suspect something doesn't feel right please get it checked out.

AKC Tuesday Night Training Groups

All training groups will be paddling on Tuesdays now that the Covid restrictions have been eased so put on your warm paddling gear and get down to the club to keep your fitness up during these colder months.

The AKC Beginners Group hasn’t had any participants in recent times so if you are new to paddling and would like to build on your paddling skills come down to the club by 4.45pm on Tuesday nights. Make yourself know to one of the other club members and they should direct you to where the group is.

The AKC Progressive Racing Group is still going strong with a variety of paddlers taking part in the short race organised and timed by Terry Bolland. So if you are new to paddling ask about this group and you will be welcomed to join in.

If you want a bit more structured training then the AKC Intermediate Group is for you. Currently run by Mike Liddle you will do training designed to improve your fitness and skills. This will help you get more speed and endurance for those longer races particularly if you are looking to have a go at the Avon Descent this year.

The AKC Advanced Group is growing and its participants are changing as paddlers move up from the Intermediate Group

Wednesday Night Club Time Trial

The last few races have seen fantastic conditions for paddling so all you need to do is put on your warm winter paddling gear and get down to the club by 5.30pm, register with Sue or Bec and be on the water for a 5.45pm start.

All paddlers are timed over the set course which gives you a benchmark for the next time trial. This is a great way to spend a Wednesday evening which includes a cup of soup and bread roll after the time trial around a warm fire and good company.
