"Yellow and Blue Make Green"

Sunday, July 11th at 11:00AM

More than a half century after the Civil Rights Act was passed, Americans still don’t know how to talk about color, equality, or the great lie about race. This song infused service shares some insights from growing up green – half “yellow” Asian and half true “blue” American – witnessing and experiencing the internal and external challenge of equality and equity.

UUWOC
A Lifetime of Service

What can be said about a person who dedicates a lifetime to a cause where the most valuable compensation comes in the form of love? Our own Jackie Weddington has now retired after 23 years of service to the UU World of Children. Just imagine the quantity of children who have been blessed by Miss Jackie's leadership and loving guidance. If we agree that early childhood education indeed affects a child for many years in ways too far reaching to understand, then because of Miss Jackie, infinite children have gone to productive lives, contributing to the betterment of our society. Her incredible devotion to these children, to the parents, to the entire spectrum of people involved in the UU World of Children, cannot be quantified. Like a stone tossed into a pond, her influence will ripple for generations to come.

The retirement celebration was well attended with upwards of about 50 people. Those who came to return even just a small part of the love they had felt from her were alumni from her many years of teaching as well as current students. Several folks stood up to tell wonderful stories about Miss Jackie, including the current director of the program, Stephanie Glasser-Alfieri, as well as the UU spiritual leader, Rev Lisa Bovee-Kemper. Others took the opportunity to share their own history with Miss Jackie, and then the presentation was closed by Maureen Nery, founder of the UU World of Children, who presented Miss Jackie with an honorary Doctorate in Montessori. Miss Jackie also received a beautiful Montessori necklace and a portrait of her, done by our own GUUF member Betsy Daubenspeck based on a photograph by Sabrina Walker was unveiled and will be hung in the school.

Light refreshments were served and some tears were shed. Miss Jackie's contribution to our school cannot be measured and will be greatly missed. We wish her a long and enjoyable retirement with the time and resources to check off many adventures on her bucket list. Our doors remain open to her anytime she wants to come visit.

Thank you, again, Miss Jackie, for everything you have done for all of us.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN for this important 30-minute film, “Other Side of the Hill.” It offers a hopeful inspiring look at local leaders on the ground in rural America who are leading climate action in their communities. It’s also about coming together, finding common ground and new climate frameworks, and shining a light on rural voices as we envision a path forward. The film will be available for free online viewing July 10 - 25.

You can watch the trailer and sign up to get a registration reminder here.

Volunteer Opportunity

Food Not Bombs

In addition to their Monday food share, Food Not Bombs has a community-free pantry, which is empty right now. 20+ hungry/thirsty people stop by every day in search of food & toiletries, and there's nothing there for them right now.

Items needed: WATER, drinks, snack foods, candy that won't melt, pop-tarts, cereal, protein rich foods, pop-tab canned foods, can openers, toiletries, pots/pans, tarps, water flavor packets, ramen, flashlights, rope, washcloths, rags, wipes, makeup, to-go condiments/packets, & cutlery, toilet paper, rain ponchos/umbrellas, and any other small items you would like to share. To find a drop-off location, go to https://www.facebook.com/UpstateFoodNotBombs/

P.S.  Many visitors come after dark when the volunteers are gone. When there's no food in the pantry, people pull everything out of the trash cans looking for something to eat. That leaves a big mess. While they’re quick to clean up messes when they are present, they can't always be there. Please keep in mind that a messy space in no way diminishes the work we do, or anyone's worthiness of receiving food or help. They’re happy that people find safety and get their needs met at our space, and they don't ever want anyone to feel unworthy of being there.
