FOREWORD
from Lianna Martin
London Regional Learning Coordinator for Social Prescribing

Hello all,

Again - big thanks to Justyna who pulls this newsletter together.   And to all the SPLWs from across London feeding into it.

Please do get in touch with myself or Justyna to share your ideas for a London network and what you think SPLWs need here in our wonderfully diverse capital city.

NHSE have a survey they are looking for SPLWs to complete (see below).  It is a great way to get your voice heard, and the more people that complete this the more leverage they have to tackle these issued head on.  Please get in touch if you are struggling to access the form, and we will find an alternative.

With the world opening up, it is good news for some and bad news for others.  Please get in touch if you ave concerns about a pending return to surgery - hlp.socialprescribing@nhs.net

Thank you for all the wonderful work you do. As always.  And hope to hear from you or see you in a session soon!

NHS ENGLAND UPDATES, SESSIONS AND SUPPORT

Social prescribing link worker survey

NHSE/I have launched a survey for social prescribing link workers to find out more about their experiences of working in and with PCNs, and the training, supervision and support they receive.

The survey will help the national team understand more about the link worker workforce in primary care, contractual arrangements, and how you work. It will help them prioritise activities as a national team to support you in your role.

All responses to the survey are anonymous and cannot be linked back to your FutureNHS collaboration platform account. Data from this survey will not be shared outside the NHS England & Improvement team.

The survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete and closes on 3 September, 2021 at 5:00pm.

To take the survey, click hereYou must be a member of the platform to complete the survey – if you would like to join, please email england.socialprescribing@nhs.net.

What social prescribing approaches exist in the UK for migrant populations? Do they improve migrants’ health and wellbeing? What should we be doing to facilitate successful social prescribing for migrants, and how can we better measure the outcomes?

  • Public Health England conducted a recent evidence review of social prescribing approaches and outcomes for migrant populations in the UK.
  • Findings from the evidence review were used to create a new social prescribing page for the Migrant Health Guide on GOV.UK, which contains recommendations for social prescribing link workers, commissioners, service managers, service evaluators and researchers.
  • Alongside this, the Greater London Authority commissioned Doctors of the World UK to produce a toolkit for link workers to assist migrants to access healthcare.

Join this webinar to participate in the launch of the Migrant Health Guide social prescribing page. You’ll also learn about the findings of Public Health England’s evidence review, hear about social prescribing link workers’ experiences working with vulnerable migrant groups, and find out more about resources that can support your work with migrants.

Open to all SPLWs & managers, expect your peers to be presenting on best practice (this section will be recorded), discussion and problem solving.

THE QUESTIONS YOU ARE ASKING
Many of you get in touch with pertinent questions many other SPLWs are also wondering.  We hope to answer the popular ones here... email lianna.martin@nhs.net to submit any burning questions!

Q7: How to use SNOMED coding while performing tasks during the COVID19 pandemic?

A7: NHSE have recently updated their guidance, you can read the full document HERE, but these are still the two codes that SPLWs should be using for their work - these are NOT for Health and Well Being Coaches or Care Coordinators to use as they will have their own SNOMED codes:
  • 871731000000106 – Referral to social prescribing service (procedure) - To be used when an individual accepts a referral to the SPLW– for first interaction in an episode of care only, not to be used to code ongoing activity.
  • 871711000000103 – Social prescribing declined (situation) - To be used when an individual declines a referral to the SPLW.
Recent updates:
  1. SNOMED code 871731000000106 Referral to Social Prescribing (procedure) should not be used to code activity previously provided to support this group of people, such as welfare calls.
  2. The above SNOMED code should not be used when SPLW completes mass booking of appointments through brief calls that do not lead to a conversation about the vaccine or support needs to attend for an appointment, collating lists of vulnerable patients, supporting volunteers and marshalling vaccination centres. This activity should be recorded using an alternative method as directed by your employer e.g. through collecting case studies of SPLW involvement as it cannot be recorded against individuals.
  3. Undertaking administrative tasks such as booking appointments should not be coded on GP IT systems as social prescribing activity, unless they include the examples mentioned in the section Coding Activity for the COVID-19 Vaccination Programme here.

Children and Young People Social Prescribing

Social Prescribing for Children and Young People (CYP) is a new and emerging area across London and nationally. LOOKING AFTER YOURSELF
Times are universally tough right now, and you are all holding a lot.  For those that feel they might be in need of support themselves, it may be useful to be aware that your local IAPT service may be prioritising support for healthcare workers.  If you are NHS funded, look through this list of services they have made available for free.

USEFUL RESOURCES

Carers, young carers and Universal Personalised Care
The aim of this guidance is to support systems to understand how each of the six components of Universal Personalised Care can be used to support unpaid carers. It shows how personalised care approaches can support delivery of the NHS Long Term Plan commitments for carers and enable carers to access more targeted support to help them to manage their own health and wellbeing. Section related to Social Prescribing - page 12.

Understanding integration: how to listen to and learn from people and communities.
Over the past year, Picker and The King’s Fund have been working with NHS England and NHS Improvement on how ICSs can listen to and learn from people and communities. They have produced a practical guide for partners working in these systems, with ideas on how they might go about this. The guide has been developed with input from ICSs, patient leaders, and engagement and experience experts. HEALTH INEQUALITIES

Registration refusal

The Bureau for Investigative Journalism report revealed that most GP surgeries refuse to register undocumented migrants despite NHS policy, and many could not provide accurate information to support enquiring patients to access the CV-19 vaccine.
Less than a quarter of practices approached agreed to register a patient without documentation.

  • The Bureau contacted around a third of GP practices in 10 locations with large populations of people born outside the UK: Newham and Brent in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester, Slough, Luton, Cardiff and Glasgow. We asked about registering a hypothetical patient: “Rosa”, a woman in her 40s without ID or proof of address.
  • Less than a quarter of GP surgeries (24%) surveyed in cities across England, Scotland and Wales would register someone without proof of address, proof of ID or legal immigration status.
  • Almost two-thirds (62%) told us they would not register the patient, while the remaining 14% said they were unsure whether they could.
  • Luton was the least accommodating; none of the surgeries we spoke to agreed to register our patient. In Brent, 12 out of 15 surgeries said they would not register our patient

Impact on access to the vaccine

  • In just over half of all calls, we were able to ask surgeries if they could suggest alternative vaccination options. The most common response, given more than a third of the time, was that they did not know.
  • One in six surgeries told us our patient would not be eligible for the vaccine because they lacked either an NHS number or immigration status. None of the surgeries that refused to register “Rosa” offered her the opportunity to be vaccinated as an unregistered patient, which is a clear option in Public Health England guidance.

Please access animated resources from DOTW on GP registration and vaccine access – available here: How to Register with a GP and Book a Vaccine - Doctors of the World. The short animation is available in 12 languages. Please do share these animations with your networks.
