Please review the Trojan Commitment to protecting ourselves, our peers, and our community. Face coverings, physical distancing, and adherence to health guidelines are required in library spaces.

We continue to prioritize digital and remote programs and services as we work with campus partners, who in turn are working with county health officials, on plans for further reopening.

Open Educational Resources (OER)

What are open educational resources (OER)? Openly licensed teaching, learning and research resources that can be freely used, edited and repurposed.  View our short one-minute video for a fun fact overview.

Would you like to learn more about OER’s in academia?  Are you Interested in making course textbooks more accessible to your students? Not sure where or how to get started with adopting an OER into your course?  Would you be interested in receiving funding to assist in adopting an OER in your courses? Or would you simply like to be informed of what an OER is and what the benefits are to you, our students, and the University?

You have questions and we would like to provide answers.  If you are interested and want to learn more about OER please email us at
sel@lib.usc.edu for further information.

New Books
Synthetic Inorganic Chemistry:
New Perspectives

Synthetic Inorganic Chemistry: New Perspectives presents summaries of the work of some of the most creative researchers in the field. The book highlights the most novel approaches and burgeoning applications of synthetic inorganic chemistry in development. Topics include non-precious metals in catalysis, smart inorganic polymers, new inorganic therapeutics, new photocatalysts for hydrogen production, and more. As the first volume in the Developments in Inorganic Chemistry series, this work is a valuable resource for students and researchers working in inorganic chemistry and material science. Arguing with Numbers:
The Intersections of Rhetoric and Mathematics

As discrete fields of inquiry, rhetoric and mathematics have long been considered antithetical to each other. That is, if mathematics explains or describes the phenomena it studies with certainty, persuasion is not needed. This volume calls into question the view that mathematics is free of rhetoric. Through nine studies of the intersections between these two disciplines, Arguing with Numbers shows that mathematics is in fact deeply rhetorical. Using rhetoric as a lens to analyze mathematically based arguments in public policy, political and economic theory, and even literature, the essays in this volume reveal how mathematics influences the values and beliefs with which we assess the world and make decisions and how our worldviews influence the kinds of mathematical instruments we construct and accept. The Atlas of AI:
Power, Politics, and the Planetary Costs of Artificial Intelligence

What happens when artificial intelligence saturates political life and depletes the planet? How is AI shaping our understanding of ourselves and our societies? Drawing on more than a decade of research, award‑winning scholar Kate Crawford reveals how AI is a technology of extraction: from the minerals drawn from the earth, to the labor pulled from low-wage information workers, to the data taken from every action and expression. This book reveals how this planetary network is fueling a shift toward undemocratic governance and increased inequity. Rather than taking a narrow focus on code and algorithms, Crawford offers us a material and political perspective on what it takes to make AI and how it centralizes power. This is an urgent account of what is at stake as technology companies use artificial intelligence to reshape the world. Access The Atlas of AI
