NRI Board Member, Dr. Ron Manderscheid Retires from NACBHDD

Dr. Ron Manderscheid, NRI Board Member, has retired from his position as President and CEO at National Association of County Behavioral Health and Developmental Disability Directors (NACBHDD). Recently, he reflected on NACBHDD’s progress and evolution since he took the reins in December 2009. 

     

STATE AND FEDERAL

North Carolina to Receive $40 Million to Address Vaping in Juul Settlement

In 2019, the state of North Carolina sued Juul Labs, alleging that they specifically targeted young people in advertising their vaping products. On June 28, a $40 million settlement was reached in North Carolina. The $40 million will be directed to vaping cessation and prevention efforts. The terms of the settlement include barring Juul from targeting its advertising to minors and puts month. Read more.  

Overdose Death Rates

The U.S. government does not track death rates for every drug. However, the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention collects information on deaths involving many of the more commonly used drugs available through 2019 at a searchable database, called CDC Wonder. Learn more.  

Disaster Technical Assistance Center Supplemental Research Bulletin

This Supplemental Research Bulletin reviews preliminary research on how the COVID-19 pandemic has affected mental health and substance use in the United States. It discusses the impacts of the pandemic, populations experiencing disproportionate impacts, and expert suggestions for supporting communities in and after the pandemic. Read more

Study Reveals Extent of Unmet Need for Mental Health Counseling During Pandemic

More than 1 in 4 American adults who had symptoms of depression or anxiety reported an unmet need for mental health counseling at the end of 2020, a study in Psychiatric Services in Advance has found. Read more.

People With Substance-Induced Psychosis Found to Be at Greater Risk of Death Than General Population

People with substance-induced psychosis appear to be at a greater risk of dying earlier than those who do not experience psychosis, according to a study in Addiction. Read more.  

Research to Prevent Suicide of Black Youth Must Take Ground Zero Approach, Say Experts 

More research on the prevention of suicide among Black youth is urgently needed, yet clinicians can and should address suicidality within this population in their practices now, according to two viewpoints published in JAMA Pediatrics. Read more.

Discharge Planning Improves Engagement With Psychiatric Care, Study Finds

Regardless of a patient’s level of engagement in psychiatric care prior to being hospitalized, having an appointment scheduled when discharged from the hospital may increase the likelihood that the patient receives follow-up care, according to a study published in Psychiatric Services. Read more.

Mobile Intervention as Effective as Group Intervention for Promoting Weight Loss in Young People With SMI

Young adults with serious mental illness (SMI) who are overweight or obese experienced similar weight loss and cardiorespiratory fitness improvements after participating in a 12-month group intervention as those who received one-on-one mobile health (mHealth) coaching for 12 months, a report in Psychiatric Services in Advance has found.
