Hybrid Worship Fundraiser – Double your contributions
The pandemic has shown us the value of allowing people to connect with Emerson in ways beyond just in-person. And now that we are preparing to worship together in person again, we are seeking to offer hybrid or multi-platform worship (both virtual and in-person worship). This entails purchasing new video and sound equipment to offer those unable to attend in-person worship a high-quality experience, both now and in the future.
That’s why we are excited to share that Emerson received a $5,500 matching grant from the Spirit Level Foundation to help us upgrade our AV system. The matching grant means for each dollar you donate, the Spirit Level Foundation contributes $1.
Offering services online has allowed us to more easily reach new people. We’ve had new people checking us out for the first time, and joining us regularly throughout the pandemic. Connecting online has offered those curious to know more about Unitarian Universalism and Emerson a low pressure way to learn what we are like, before ever having to step foot on our campus.
It also made it easier for those already part of the Emerson community to join us as well: members who were temporarily out of the area; folks for whom attending was difficult, like those in an assisted living facility; past members and young adults who left for college; and out of state relatives who wanted to watch their loved ones’ contributions to worship. Folks who would have previously been unable to attend a worship service, special program, or committee meeting have found greater flexibility in joining from wherever they are.
So help us take advantage of this matching grant, and make a donation now!
Donate online http://donate.emersonuuc.org, and select Hybrid Worship Fundraiser.
Or send a check made to Emerson UU Church, with Hybrid Worship Fundraiser in the memo.

At our June congregational meeting, we voted to endorse a proposed UUA 8th Principle: “We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.” Join us as we to explore how we, as individuals and as a congregation, can be transformed as we live into that principle.

When can we get back together as a congregation?
Emerson’s “Back Together Team” has been making plans for in-person gatherings, following guidance and research from the Unitarian Universalist Association, CDC, and state and local authorities. Guidance will be coming soon for small group gatherings. Watch the “Back Together” announcements in our e-news and website for the most recent recommendations.
Over the summer, our Greater LA congregations will all be worshipping together, with the ministers taking turns leading the Sunday services, as part of a Virtual sUUmmer Road Trip (see below). After each service, in our “coffee break-out rooms,” we will have the opportunity to get to know members from other congregations.
We anticipate having our first in-person congregational service on September 12, for our water communion, the traditional beginning of the church year. We have received a matching technology grant that will help us to have multi-platform (a.k.a. hybrid) services so that anyone can join in-person or online. More information about a technology fundraiser will follow soon.
Other changes will depend on the status of the virus and scientific findings. In the meantime, please follow LA County Guidance. For those who are fully vaccinated see
http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/docs/vaccine/AfterFullyVaccinated.pdf (for more general COVID information see http://publichealth.lacounty.gov/media/Coronavirus/)

JOIN A TOUCHSTONES SMALL GROUP
During this time, when our lives have shrunk down dramatically, connecting with others (via phone or online) has become incredibly vital to our mental and spiritual wellbeing. One of the ways we connect with each other at Emerson is in our Small Group Ministries—which are the core of our adult spiritual development program at Emerson. Each month, our Touchstones small groups explore the monthly theme in greater depth.
Although exploring the theme with a group of people will always be a richer experience, you don’t need to be part of a small group to benefit from what Touchstones has to offer. Anyone is free to read the Touchstones Journal (link above), which contains readings, short reflections and wisdom stories, and a daily quotation, connected to that month’s theme. The last page of the journal also contains an outline for the small group meetings, if you’re curious about the format.
If you would like to be part of a group, sign-up here. Questions: email Rev. Matthew revmatthew@emersonuuc.org or Renée Lançon reneelancon@aol.com.

TECH ASSOCIATES NEEDED!
If you've attended Emerson Sunday Worship in Zoom, and you no doubt have noticed the many different elements--both live and recorded--that come together to make up the service. The Tech Associate is key to presenting a professional and worshipful online service. Emerson's Tech Associates are volunteers stepping up when guest speakers take to the virtual pulpit to produce the service, coordinating the sequence of elements, including live video and PowerPoint slideshow. If you have had exposure to PowerPoint, or live online meeting platforms, and would like to help with presenting Sunday services, contact Rev. Matthew (revmatthew@emersonuuc.org).
