Island Startup Benefits from Mentorship, Financing Support
Futurpreneur first supported the business with a loan of $15,000 in 2019 in the core start-up program, and through the pandemic also provided loan relief and access to the Futurpreneur Canada Peer-to-Peer Discussion Forum. Futurpreneur provides financing, mentoring and support tools to aspiring business owners aged 18 to 39. “We work with entrepreneurs at the start up phase – so usually about a year in. We don’t work with entrepreneurs in growth or mature phase,” says Andrea Welling, Regional Director, BC at Futurpreneur.

Greater Victoria Harbour Authority Releases Economic Impact Study
It’s a big number, but not an unexpected one. The recently released Economic Impact Study for the Victoria and Esquimalt Harbours – initiated by the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority – divulges that harbour-based activities generated $2.9 billion in economic output, supporting 14,983 jobs across Greater Victoria in 2019.

Nanaimo city council were presented with concept plans for Diver Lake Inn and Suites, a 72-room hotel proposed for 3679 Shenton Rd., and unanimously passed first and second readings of an official community plan amendment application and a re-zoning application.
The construction of the 172-room Courtyard by Marriott and the closure of the 100-room Howard Johnson Harbourside has resulted in a net gain of fewer than 120 rooms. Another 72 rooms will help support long-term development of the tourism industry including conference business and sports tourism.

An Accenture survey found that the vast majority of employees with disabilities don’t feel their workplace culture is fully committed to helping them thrive and succeed. This article offers five steps that organizations can take to make such disabilities feel so safe and included that they will be willing to disclose their conditions. And that’s important: The research found that employees who do disclose their disability at work are 30% more engaged — in terms of career satisfaction and aspirations, confidence, and a sense of belonging — than those who don’t.

What can YOU do to take advantage of the business case for making a safe space for those with disabilities?
