Mitigating Poverty: Global Estimates of the Impact of Income Support during the Pandemic

UNDP PUBLICATION - 1 JULY 2021 - READ HERE

This report, co-authored by BPPS SPE team members Johanna Fajardo-Gonzalez, María Montoya-Aguirre, and Eduardo Ortiz-Juarez, and GPN Chief Economist George Gray Molina, provides insights on not only how the pandemic impacted poor and vulnerable households in developing countries, but also how important policy choices were to mitigate poverty increases. Some poorer countries were effective in thwarting the rise in poverty, indicating that there is room for action even under significant constraints and uncertainty. The paper asserts that despite the power of social protection, many of these programmes were out of reach for low-income countries, setting the stage for a two-track recovery from the pandemic. UNDP POLICY BRIEF - 24 JUNE 2021 - READ HERE

Fears that the world may emerge from the pandemic more unequal than ever have prompted significant efforts to close the gap between rich and poor countries. Administrator, Achim Steiner notes that this could be the “largest capital allocation since the end of World War II,” but without additional steps, its impact could fall short. Read this analysis of the IMF’s Special Drawing Rights plan by BPPS' Lars Jensen here, as part of UNDP’s Development Futures Series
