Hello

Firstly to acknowledge the elephant in the room....I'm not a football fan, but I have a small child at home trying to learn 3 lions on the shirt (I had no idea what the Jules Rimet was, did you?) & like everyone else I'd be chuffed with an 'emergency' bank holiday, so fingers crossed yes!

Now back to marketing!

I feel like there's a theme running through this week, other than football. It's the self doubt of business owners & the way they choose to market.

We all want to do well. But how exactly should we do that? Do we follow the herd or do we strike out alone and try to do things differently?

Take What You Can, Give Nothing Back, That's The Pirates Code

Adam Mosseri, Head of Instagram, gave an update on the new direction for the platform. This caused a lot of panic. It seemed that he was saying Instagram would no longer be a photo sharing app, but a video focused platform.

It left lots of people feeling quite worried, maybe questioning whether the tool was for them. Then a correction went out from Adam's Twitter account
So the platform will continue to be about pictures too.

In recent years there's been more convergence on social media than ever before.

It seems none of the apps want to be known as a one trick pony, and are all living their best pirate lives, stealing each others features with zero concern for originality.

Which brings me to a piece of advice from Gary Vee issued in his latest newsletter which I am quoting below.

Spend no time looking at your competition

"One of the main ways I think I’ve stood out my entire career has been by paying attention to the consumer, not my competition.

A lot of people do too much analysis on competitors thinking it’ll get them ahead, when really all that does is two things.

First, it guarantees that you’ll spend all your time on defence instead of offence.

Second, you’ll become subconsciously more and more similar to your competition because that’s what’s eating up all of your focus.

I decided early on to take a different route. Instead of worrying about what others were doing, I focused my attention on really seeing the customers and what they wanted sooner and with more understanding than anybody else...day trading attention. This is what made me unique."

What do you think? Is this good advice? I asked in my Facebook group and it seemed to spark a lot of discussion.

This reminds me personally that we have to be very careful who we pay attention to.

There are critics everywhere, including of course the inner critic, but we have to be sure that they have the credentials to give us that criticism and for us to take it on board.

I posted 'The Man In The Arena' again this week because it is just the best quote going when it comes to this theme.

" It is not the critic that counts; not the man who points out where the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better"

I'll leave you to think about it all.

Have a good weekend.

100 Marketing Tips for Small Business Owners

You can buy a copy of my book from either my website or Amazon

A recent review

"I bought this book in the very early days of my business when I was feeling overwhelmed with marketing. I loved how the book is broken into manageable sections so that I could put each individual tip into practice. It’s a book that I regularly dip into for inspiration and it has joined the shelves of my essential business books.

This book is crucial reading for any business owner, especially if you keep trying the same marketing ideas and need some great new tips."

My 100th Blog Is Coming Up

When I started writing on my website back in 2019 I had no thought in my head for the number of articles I'd write, the fact one of them would lead me to writing a book, or the bank of content that I was accruing for future use.

I just like to write, and as I am always saying to others, it is good to have your own place on the web, that belongs just to you.

This week I published my 90th article, which was a blog on John Cleese's book Creativity A Short And Cheerful Guide.

And now I am starting to think about what I should publish for blog 100.  I asked about this on my Instagram stories and had some good answers back

Little Green Duck suggested " Celebrate your business journey from the beginning to now. Indulge yourself!"

Whilst Carnsight Communications thought " 100 Tips or ideas from your previous posts"

As a valued reader of my newsletter I'd love to know what you would like me to write about.  Just hit reply today and let me know.

Your wish, shall be my command :)
