As the world heats up and the virus spreads, let's begin with the importance of kindness to each other and teaching it to our children.

Kindness

The UNESCO MGIEP campaign Kindness Matters highlights stories of how young people are contributing to sustainable development goals through acts of kindness.

New Books

The Palgrave Handbook of Positive Education, edited by Peggy Kern and Michael Wehmeyer, is open access – you can download all the chapters. An incredible resource. Denise Quinlan and I wrote the chapter on Positive Education with Disadvantaged Students, and will be talking about this at the PESA Wellbeing in Education conference in Sydney - now postponed to 30 September to 2 October 2021.
Isaac Prilleltensky combines positive psychology with community psychology. He and his wife Ora write with heart and mind. Their latest book, How People Matter: Why it Affects Health, Happiness, Love, Work and Society, is published by Cambridge University Press. Download his article Mattering at the Intersection of Psychology, Philosophy and Politics here.
Building Better Schools with Evidence-based Policy by Kelly-Ann Allen, Andrea Reupert and Lindsay Oades contains 38 ready-to-use policies and provides a succinct summary of best practices. It's a time-saving resource for schools and free to download. Please share.

Tom Brunzell, with Jacolyn Norrish, has turned his excellent PhD thesis into this book: Creating Trauma-Informed, Strengths-Based Classrooms, published by Jessica Kingsley.

Thérèse Hoyle has published a Second Edition of her 101 Playground Games. Buy from her website with a £5 discount using code FLY21

Watch

UNESCO and MGIEP published Re-thinking Learning: A Review of Social and Emotional Learning in Education Systems last year. This 40m video of the on-line launch is worth watching

Circle Solutions and ASPIRE

The ASPIRE principles for evaluating school and student wellbeing. Click on the link to download. For those who don't know,  ASPIRE is an acronym for Agency, Safety, Positivity, Inclusion, Respect and Equity

On-line training has been a new learning experience but means that Circles are now happening all over the world. It has been suggested by recent CS trainers that we have a Zoom meeting a couple of times a year so all accredited trainers can meet together, share ideas, resources and challenges. We have scheduled one for 3rd September. If you are an accredited CS trainer and would like to join us, please email sue@growinggreatschools.com for the link.

Conferences

The International Positive Psychology Association (IPPA) conference takes place virtually next week. I think we are all pleased not to be in Vancouver right now! The seven authors of Creating the World We Want to Live In have put together a video for an invited symposium. This will be available after the conference on the website www.creatingtheworldwewanttolivein.org

Pedagoo, Saturday, September 11, 2021, Hayling Island, Hants.  A free feast of learning for teachers by teachers.

We are delighted that the Positive Schools conferences have now been re-scheduled for November in Brisbane and Perth. There is a great line up of presenters. Check them out.

Heads up for conferences next year (yes, both on at the same time - having been rescheduled because of Covid19 - we will be presenting in Iceland):

Research

The Wellbeing Literature Review from the AISNSW is a comprehensive document that is valuable to everyone who wants to develop evidence based practice in their setting.

The International Journal of Emotional Education is open access and has many great articles. This is a link to the latest, published in April.

Good news:  People like us more than we think!  digest.bps.org.uk/2021/07/07/kids-as-young-as-five-underestimate-how-much-their-peers-like-them/

Please let us know of any conferences, publications, research that others may want to know about. We will do our best to put these on the website and highlight a selection in the newsletter.

Thank you for all you do  – especially in these troubled times. Take care.
