St Peter's Cathedral enews - Friday 2 July 2021
COVID-19 and Cathedral Worship

From the Locum Dean: If restrictions change, we will let you know as and when that is possible. Please remain alert to the news and announcements from the health department and from our political leaders.
As I prepare this letter, I am aware of the rapidly changing restrictions across the state and across the country (the full direction for public gatherings in South Australia is available on the SA Government website, here: https://www.covid-19.sa.gov.au/emergency-declarations/public-activities).

We are permitted to continue to gather in worship in the Cathedral, so services on Sunday will go ahead as planned. To comply with the COVID restrictions all services will be said, that is, no singing. Please continue to be compliant with the 1.5 metre spacing and while masks are not mandatory you may wish to wear one. Masks will be available at the West Door of the Cathedral. The clergy administering Communion will be masked.

At the time of writing, we appear to be relatively safe in South Australia, but it will only take one person to break the interstate rules and our perceived safety may well be short lived. If you have not done so already, please do arrange to be vaccinated. The only way that we will be able to return to shaking hands in greeting strangers, and hugging old and new friends, will be when all of us have been vaccinated. Please do determine the quickest and safest way for you and your family to be vaccinated. In the meantime, I pray that every parishioner and your families will be kept safe and will continue in good health.

Please continue to pray for an end to this pandemic:
for the people working to understand the virus and to produce effective vaccines:
for the people who have already been infected:
for the friends and family who are grieving the death of someone they have loved:
and please pray for the parishioners of this Cathedral.

The concert: Sadly, the concert scheduled for Saturday July 3 has now been cancelled in keeping with the restrictions put in place by our state leaders. Our music team and choristers have been working hard for this concert so please do pray for them and support them at this time.
Please continue to pray regularly for the appointment of a Dean to the Cathedral. I know that I harp on about this and include the prayer in the pew sheet whenever I am able. There is a reason for this. It is my belief that prayer with God is answered by God. When we pray regularly for God to make known the person that God has chosen to be the Dean, and a Dean is appointed, we accept the appointment as being the answer to our prayers and therefore to be the will of God. Simple isn’t it.

Speaking of the prayer we offer for the appointment of a Dean, it has been suggested that an extra line be inserted. You might like to insert the line as you offer the prayer. With the extra line it would be as follows.

A prayer as we seek a new Dean: Bountiful God, give to this parish a faithful pastor who will faithfully speak your word and minister your sacraments; A caring person who will love your people; an encourager who will equip your people for ministry and enable us to fulfil our calling. Give to those who will choose, wisdom, discernment and patience, and to us give warm and generous hearts, for Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen.
The Coming of the Light: Prior to the latest outbreak of COVID-19 the Archbishop, as Primate, and Bishop Chris, the National Aboriginal Bishop, were to travel to Erub on Darnley Island for the celebration of the 150th year of the Coming of the Light (the Gospel) to the Torres Strait. The missionaries who arrived in the Torres Strait were welcomed with great enthusiasm and this is, therefore, a very enjoyable and welcome celebration in that area. We have been asked to celebrate with them. Alas, because of the limitations imposed by the covid plague, neither the Archbishop, nor Bishop Chris, are able to travel to Erub for the celebrations. So sad. For our prayers I include the collect for the day in this Enews, and in the Sunday Order of Service.

Almighty God, you have given to the people of the Islands of the Torres Strait the glorious light of the gospel of Christ: mercifully grant that we may always walk in the light of His love, and give us the strength and unifying power of your Holy Spirit to spread that light and enlarge your kingdom in the hearts of all people. We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

– The Rev'd Adrian Stephens, Locum Dean

Beanie Update
After the latest count, we have 413 beanies collected for Anglicare SA – thank you to everyone who has contributed so far. Once we reach 500 beanies, the project will be complete, so please continue to drop off any beanies or wool contributions at the Cathedral shop desk in the coming weeks.

Quote for the week

'God of the Church, we reflect on the life and witness of St Peter. We recall his earthy background, his vulnerabilities, his passion, his willingness to have a go and to make mistakes. We recall your tender, restorative approach to him in his times of failure and confusion. We give thanks for the growth of his theological vision, the gradual movement in his story from parochial exclusive, to global inclusive. May your Spirit be so incarnate in our lives, the ministry of our Cathedral, and in the witness of the global Christian community.  Amen.'
– Phil Daughtry (Cathedral Member)
