JUNE 2020

From the Leadership Team

At the June Quarterly Business Meeting Dr. Earnest presented the plan for our transition out of pandemic-mode. The goal of the plan is to help us move through the phase of emotional lows brought on by the pandemic to a phase of restoration. We hope to accomplish this through a little R&R... and R. We intend to take this summer to "rest." While that can be a challenge in our line of work, the idea is to get back to the basics of patient care and teaching and put a pause on new projects. We'll follow this in the fall by renewing our values and priorities with a new strategic plan. Thank you for all the care you provided over the past sixteen months through all the emotional highs and lows. It has undoubtedly been a wild ride that I'm sure we are all ready to get off.

GIM Proud

Carey Candrian, PhD was featured recently on PBS NewsHour in a "Brief but Spectacular" segment for her take on breaking the script in healthcare. In the episode, Dr. Candrian discusses how the language we use in medicine can compromise care for LGBTQ seniors. You can watch the full (but brief!) episode by clicking here. She was also featured this month in a CU Anschutz Today article, which you can find here. Congrats and thank you, Carey, for this incredible work!

GIM Team

Please welcome Robert Bennett, PhD, CPNP-AC, our new T32 fellow. Dr. Bennett's research focuses on the lived experiences of aging young adults who have survived cancer during childhood and are experiencing a secondary cancer as an adult. His research applies descriptive methods, grounded in the Relational Caring Inquiry and Husserlian Phenomenology. Dr. Bennett's goal as a Palliative Care researcher is to investigate the concept of hope, the impact of hope, and the transitions of hope for aging young adults as a means for decreasing psychological, spiritual, and existential suffering in this population. His long-term goals are to develop future interventions that sustain hope for aging young adults across their lifespan.

Please welcome Madhavi Patt, MD, MPH, our new faculty member in Executive Health Services. Dr. Patt completed her residency at Boston University Medical Center followed by a health policy and research fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. She joins us most recently from private practice in the metro area. Dr. Patt's clinical interests include chronic disease management, women's health/menopause, and preventive cardiology.

Shelby Dietrich is the new CU Medicine Regional Director of Clinical Operations for Primary Care. She will provide leadership and oversight for the CU Medicine community primary care practices, including our own CU Medicine Internal Medicine - Cherry Creek practice (formerly DIMG).

Yale's most popular course for undergraduates, Psychology and the Good Life taught by Laurie Santos, PhD, has been adapted for online learning and is now available for FREE to all University employees. You can find the online course, The Science of Wellbeing, here. You can enroll anytime and complete the course at your own pace. The Department of Psychiatry recently launched CU-Wellbeing, an anonymous self-assessment tool designed to help anyone determine their own level of distress and provide specific guidance to resources based on their individual needs. The modules can be completed in just 10 minutes. While the information you learn may not prompt you to take action for yourself, it may be helpful in better preparing you to support a friend or colleague. You can find the self-assessment here.

The Chancellor recently shared the COVID-19 vaccination policy for our campus. You can find more information about the policy, exemptions and required forms, and the vaccination sticker program here.

Two of our favorite AHP Outreach Coordinators/Primary Care Tobacco Treatment Specialists, Tiffany Schommer and Aubrey Bush, recently took their expertise in tobacco treatment and public health out of the exam room and into the classroom. Earlier this month, Aubrey and Tiffany gave a presentation to 6th and 7th grade students at Aurora Science and Tech for their Science Wednesday series. They talked to the students about becoming a Tobacco Treatment Specialist and how they support their communities by using education, experience, and technology. They also talked about why nicotine is so addictive and how they help their patients quit for good.
The UCHealth Natalie Kutner Palliative Care Creative Arts Therapy (CAT) Program was launched in 2016, offering CAT to hospitalized patients as a component of comprehensive palliative care services. Since that time, the CAT program has received multiple national accolades. Through therapeutic, individual interaction at the bedside, music and art therapists support individuals in using a variety of artistic media to enhance a sense of control and promote emotional and self-expression. The Palliative Care CAT Program recently received a UCHealth Foundation grant to begin a CAT internship program to increase the reach of CAT and develop a pipeline for CAT therapists. Angela Wibben, MM, MT-BC is leading the Music Therapy Internship. The inaugural music therapist intern, Lauren Baumgartner, will start this July. Next steps will be to add the Art Therapy Internship. This innovative CAT Internship is the first of its kind nationally, training 6-8 interns annually to specialize in the medical creative arts therapies, representing both music and art therapists. For additional information, please contact Angela Wibben, MM, MT-BC.

The School of Medicine is recruiting facilitators for the first Professionalism small group discussion as part of the new TREK curriculum for incoming 1st year medical students. For nearly 30 years, GIM has had some form of a primary care research fellowship. About five years ago, due to changing funding criteria, we lost funding. We just received word that ACCORDS has received new funding to restart a primary care research fellowship. This is great news for the Division. The fellowship has been a great launching pad for many of our faculty who have pursued successful academic careers as researchers and also as leaders in various capacities. We will start recruiting fellows immediately. If you know of residents who are interested in such a fellowship please encourage them to apply of send their names to Drs. Mark Earnest or Amy Huebschmann. You can also visit their website for more information by clicking here.
We received a couple excellent patient comments this month:
"Dr. Lin and his staff have been taking care of my health needs for about 30 years. I would have no other PCP. The care, professionalism, courtesy and mannerisms are all top shelf, and I don't know of anyone in this whole world that I would trust more that Dr. C.T. Lin and his team."
Regarding Lowry IM Clinic: "Going on four years, I continue to receive the highest quality of care from the exceptionally talented doctors, medical assistants, and other professionals at this clinic. Highest praise and recommendation!"
