ASCOT KAYAK CLUB

NANGA CHALLENGE 2021  –  Newsletter #1.

Adventure Race at Chuditch Campsite, Lane Pool Reserve, Nanga, Nr Dwellingup WA, Saturday September 11th

Ascot Kayak Club’s multisport event in the Jarrah forest surrounding Dwellingup is on again. This year’s event is to be held on Saturday 11th September, and there is a new entry class for the LESS EXPERIENCED PADDLER, the Adventure Pairs category. There is also a new two-leg category: Paddle and Bike.

If you aren’t a regular moving water paddler, but can hold a paddle and love MTB [mountain biking] and cross-country (REAL cross-country) running, the Adventure Pairs category is for you.

You will complete all three legs together with your pair. If you don’t have a suitable boat, Ascot Kayak Club can supply you with a double SIT-ON craft. If you are new to moving water, you will need to attend the course reconnaissance day the previous weekend (Saturday 4th September) and you will be required to paddle a SIT-ON craft during the event.

The Sept 4th reconnaissance day will actually be open to all participants, and will give a great advantage, you will know when and where to go hard on the day. In addition to the intro to the paddle leg, there will be a guided lap of the MTB course on this reconnaissance day.

The paddle leg is grade 1, which means slow to medium flowing water with very small, regular waves or ripples, relatively few obstacle and an easy path to find and follow. The 8km Adventure Pairs paddle is very achievable. The MTB course includes some single track sections of the Mundabiddi Trail and forest access tracks which, on occasion, allow opportunities to pass. The run course has a great variation of trail types AND GRADIENTS, and might even give you a feeling of being completely lost and alone at some points [😀]. All legs start and finish at the Chuditch Campsite, Lane Poole Reserve, Dwellingup.

Regular entry options are the  ‘Nice’ or “Nasty’ courses which can be completed Solo, in Relay teams, or in Duathlon Pairs. The Duathlon Pairs categories are either Paddle and Bike or Bike and Run. There are also Duathlon Solo options [Paddle & Bike and Bike & Run].

If you arrive for the weekend on the Friday, you can paddle and ride the course ahead of time. If you stay for Sunday, you can explore more of the many new MTB trails in the area. You could even have a relaxed social paddle on the Sunday morning, or enjoy coffee in Pinjarra or Dwellingup on the drive home.

Camping at the Chuditch site has been reserved for Nanga entrants, volunteers and families, so the more the merrier. Camping has been discounted by DPaW for our event and is $11.00 per night per person, children are $3.00. There are no fires allowed in order to protect local Fauna in and around this campground by the Murray River, there is a large communal kitchen which can be shared prior to and post the event

Put it in the schedule and if planning a team, find your mates or Duathlon Pairs early. Relay teams or Duathlon Pairs are good fun, you can cheer each other on, or help each other around the course. Be sure to do a few hills rides and runs beforehand, you will enjoy the event a whole lot more if you have actually trained for it!.

Early-bird entries will open from July 1, beat the August the price rise ! Camping at Chuditch for the Saturday night post event is included for all entries completed in JULY, or until the campsite is full. Be quick, sites are limited, first in, best... camp spot!
