AUSTRALASIA NEWSLETTER

GET INVOLVED AND MEET YOUR MP

Hello <<First Name>>

Today CLIA launches the next phase of our Ready, Set, Sail campaign, aimed at putting Australian politicians in front of the people most affected by the ongoing cruise suspension.

We’re urging our travel agent members, suppliers and other industry stakeholders to meet personally with their local Members of Parliament, to help highlight the enormous human cost of the suspension and reinforce our efforts to achieve a pathway to resumption.

To help make this happen, we have created a new online toolkit which provides everything you need to seek face-to-face or virtual meetings with your state and federal representatives. It provides step-by-step instructions so you can contact your MP, explain all the key issues including the impact of the suspension on your business and family, give them essential fact sheets to consider, and seek their commitment to help achieve a responsible plan for cruising’s recovery.

CLIA and cruise lines have been lobbying hard among political leaders and will continue to do so. Your involvement will help reinforce our efforts and show the devastating personal impact within politicians’ own electorates.

In New Zealand, CLIA and cruise lines have been holding important discussions with government and this process is continuing. While the time isn’t right to launch a similar campaign in New Zealand just now, we are working closely with the New Zealand Cruise Association to ensure we pursue solutions that work for New Zealand, and we’ll continue to keep you posted.

To find out more and seek a meeting with your MP, follow the step-by-step guide and view the downloadable resources on our Meet Your MP page.

Stay Safe,

Joel Katz
Managing Director, CLIA Australasia

COVID-19 UPDATE

Last week the Australian Government announced it was working with the states to create a four-phase plan to re-open Australia as it emerges from the pandemic.

Though timing is uncertain, it will include steps to ease travel restrictions and progressively reopen international borders, making it a positive move forward for the travel and tourism sector.

In its response to the announcement, CLIA has said State and Federal Governments need to include carefully managed domestic cruise operations within the early stages of their plans.  Provisions for domestic cruising are needed in order to save thousands of local jobs and businesses that have been cut off from cruise tourism.

CLIA Managing Director Australasia Joel Katz said Australia’s ongoing cruise suspension had already cost the local economy an estimated $6 billion in losses and put more than 18,000 jobs in doubt.

“The cruise industry has done an enormous amount of work to lay out health protocols to underpin a responsible resumption of cruising in Australia,” Mr Katz said. “We now need governments at the state and federal levels to agree on a framework that sets out the pathway forward for cruising as part of their wider plans for travel.”

EVENTS

Nominate a CLIA Cruise Champion

CLIA will make a special presentation of its Cruise Champion award at Cruise360 Australasia, recognising the determination of Australian and New Zealand travel agents during the pandemic.

The Cruise Champion award is ordinarily presented at CLIA’s annual Cruise Industry Awards, honouring an individual travel agent member who has excelled as a champion for the cruise industry. While the awards and presentation night have been suspended during the pandemic, CLIA has announced it will make a special presentation of the Cruise Champion category in recognition of the devastating circumstances travel agents have been operating in.

The Cruise Champion award honours an outstanding individual who embodies CLIA’s mission of educating, advocating and promoting the cruise industry. The award is open to CLIA Australasia travel agent members for self- or peer-nomination until 31 July, 2021, and the winner will be announced at the Cruise360 Conference.

Please download the form and send your nomination to info-aus@cruising.org.

MERCY SHIPS
- CLIA'S CHARITY OF CHOICE

World's Largest Civilian Hospital Ship Delivered for 2022 Mission

The Global Mercy™, the world’s largest civilian hospital ship, has successfully been delivered to Mercy Ships, after a handover celebration at the Tianjin Xingang shipyard.

”This day is a dream come true – not only for us, but for those we serve,” stated Don Stephens, Mercy Ships founder.

Alongside it's sister ship, the Africa Mercy, Mercy Ships will be able to double the impact and provide hope and healing to those who need it most.

In July, the Global Mercy is scheduled to sail to Europe where, hosted by the Port of Antwerp from early September, the ship will be further outfitted with IT and medical equipment installations and soft furnishings.

A further Africa welcome is being planned in Dakar, Senegal before the ship begins full operation.
