In this newsletter, we will review activities and achievements from April to May 2021, and highlight upcoming events. We also provide digital business commentary and insights of relevance for industry.

RINNO H2020

RINNO is a four-year project worth €4.8m funded by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 programme focusing on developing innovative solutions to enhance energy-efficiency, cost-efficiency and sustainability in European building renovation. Prof. Theo Lynn, Dr. Pierangelo Rosati, and Prof. Mark Cummins represent IIDB and DCU in the project, leading the business research and dissemination of RINNO.

Horizon 2020 Funding & Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship Secured

Dr. Gary Sinclair secured Horizon 2020 funding and a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship worth almost €200,000 for a proposed 2-year study exploring how fan engagement can be mobilised in order to create increasing participation and commercial value in Women's Football with a specific emphasis on Ireland. This research will be conducted in partnership with a number of academic and industry stakeholders, including CSM Sports & Entertainment and The Fan Experience Company.

Cyber Science 2021

C-MRiC's annual cybersecurity conference Cyber Science took place as a virtual event this June 14th-18th.

Cyber Science, co-sponsored by IEEE, is the flagship conference of the Centre for Multidisciplinary Research, Innovation and Collaboration (C-MRiC) focusing on pioneering research and innovation in Cyber Situational Awareness, Social Media, Cyber Security and Cyber Incident Response.

GETDigital 2021

The IIDB, in the DCU Business School, hosted GETDigital, a five-day virtual event attended by over 1000 participants from 25 countries. In doing so, GETDigtial supported entrepreneurs and businesses to harness digital technologies.

It was wonderful to see a large number of DCU alumni among the contributors to this conference, which has been made available online. Congratulations to the IIDB and Business School team behind the event - particularly Molly Brennan, Antonia Egli, David Kenny, Theo Lynn, Pierangelo Rosati, and Rob Walsh.

CIO & IT Leaders Summit 2021

The IIDB teamed up with iQuest & Business Post Live as a media partner for the 4th Annual CIO & IT Leaders Summit which took place on the 24th June, 2021

The CIO & IT Leaders Summit aimed to balance the strategic and tactical by digging into leading CIO’s lessons learned from the IT response to COVID-19 and delivered insights on how they plan to support enterprise recovery.

How Value is Disrupted in Football Fandom & How Fans Respond

Prof Julie Tinson, Dr Gary Sinclair and Dr Ross Gordon investigate the ways in which value is disrupted in contemporary football fandom, in a context of increasing commercialisation and marketisation. Focusing on football fans’ perceptions of value across platforms, this research explores how negative experiences are compensated to recover value. This paper has been published in European Sport Management Quarterly and can be found here.

UK Parliamentary Inquiry: Evidence Submitted to the House of Commons Digital, Media, Culture and Sport Committee

The evidence Dr Gary Sinclair submitted to the House of Commons Digital, Media, Culture and Sport Committee (DCMS) Inquiry into the Economics of Music Streaming was successfully published and can be viewed here.

Can Finance Be a Virtuous Practice? A MacIntyrean Account

The Chair of Economic and Business Ethics of the Faculty of Economics and Business Sciences of the Comillas Pontifical University and Bankinter Consumer Finance, a consumer subsidiary of the Bankinter Group, has announced the winners of the IV edition of the Research Awards in Business Ethics.

The third prize went to IIDB member Dr. Marta Rocchi, Mr. Ignacio Ferrero of the University of Navarra and Mr. Ron Beadle of Northumbria University for their work "Can finance be a virtuous practice? a mcintyrean account."

Putting the system back into training and firm performance research: A review and research agenda

Thomas N. Garavan, Alma McCarthy, Yanqing Lai, Nicholas Clarke, Ronan Carbery, Claire Gubbins, Maura Sheehan and Mark N.K. Saunders recently published a paper investigating training and firm performance that is currently at an inflection point; capable of recognising previous achievements but also having a focus on the future. Lessons from Virtual Internships: Research Insights & Practical Toolkit

IIDB member Claire Gubbins was part of the research team attached to DCU’s Leadership and Talent Institute that, with support from Deloitte, sought to learn from the experiences of organisations who pivoted their internship programmes to virtual formats. This initative was in response to the rapid shift to virtual internships caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. 

The research insights and practical toolkit resources in this report are based on the experiences of 22 organisations that participated in this study. More information available here.

RINNO: Towards an Open Renovation Platform for Integrated Design and Delivery of Deep Renovation Projects

The building stock accounts for a significant portion of worldwide energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. While the majority of the existing building stock has poor energy performance, deep renovation efforts are stymied by a wide range of human, technological, organisational and external environment factors across the value chain.

This paper published in Sustainability and authored by Theo Lynn, Pierangelo Rosati, Antonia Egli, Stelios Krinidis, Komninos Angelakoglou, Vasileios Sougkakis, Dimitrios Tzovaras, Mohamad Kassem, David Greenwood and Omar Doukari presents a roadmap for an open renovation platform for managing and delivering deep renovation projects for residential buildings based on seven design principles.

Exploring the competing influences of privacy concerns and positive beliefs on citizen acceptance of contact tracing mobile applications

The continued proliferation of information technology in all aspects of our lives fosters benefits but also generates risks to individuals' privacy. In emerging contexts, such as government surveillance technologies, there is a dearth of research investigating the positive and negative drivers of citizens' acceptance.

This journal article of Computers in Human Behavior authored by Grace Fox, Trevor Clohessy, Lisa van der Werff, Pierangelo Rosati and Theo Lynn offers important empirical and theoretical implications for the privacy literature in the government surveillance, location-based services, and mobile health application contexts, as well as practical implications for governments and developers introducing applications that rely on mass acceptance and reciprocal information disclosure. Benchmarking Machine Learning Models to Assist in the Prognosis of Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis (TB) is an airborne infectious disease caused by organisms in the Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) complex. In many low and middle-income countries, TB remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality.

This journal article of Informatics authored by Maicon Herverton, Lino Ferreira da Silva Barros, Geovanne Oliveira Alves, Lubnnia Morais Florêncio Souza, Elisson da Silva Rocha, João Fausto Lorenzato de Oliveira, Theo Lynn, Vanderson Sampaio and Patricia Takako Endo benchmarks machine learning models to aid TB prognosis using a Brazilian health database of confirmed cases and deaths related to TB in the State of Amazonas.
