I just tasted the much anticipated new release of Louis Jadot's special cuvee Beaune 1er Cru and it's a stunner. There can be few 1er Cru Burgundy reds offering more for your money.

The concept is simple, wait for the very best red vintages in Beaune and create a blend from the best 1er Cru vineyards from that vintage, age for two years (18 months in oak and 6 months in stainless steel) to create a wine which displays great richness of fruit, velvety mouthfeel and ability to age very well.

The inaugural vintage 2009 was the 150 anniversary year of Louis Jadot and released to signify this landmark year. Since then they have release 2012, 2015 and now 2018. This latest release is a blend of 16 Climats which are detailed on the label and has received some very good reviews from the major critics, including Vinous who put it into their cellar favourites stating the following:

"A few years ago, I was fortunate to attend an evening tasting of ancient vintages from Louis Jadot reserves, a cornucopia of rare bottles stretching back to the 1860s. It was to celebrate Jadot’s 150th anniversary... This was the catalyst for a special cuvée, a blend from several Premier Cru climats within the Beaune appellation, that was inaugurated with the 2009 vintage. It was so successful that it has been followed-up in special years such as 2012, 2015 and now the latest release, 2018". - N.Martin

The 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Célébration offers crunchy red berry fruit on the nose, crushed strawberry mingling with raspberry preserve and cranberry. A light vanilla scent emerges from the background. It is all disarmingly seductive (even more so the following day). The palate is medium-bodied with a very smooth and silky texture. Tart red cherries and crushed strawberry on the entry, modest depth, cashmere in texture and more sumptuous than previous iterations, unsurprising given the style of the 2018 vintage. Even if the 2018 Célébration does not quite “kick on” towards the finish, it is still utterly delicious. Drink 2022-2040.

This is definitely a child of its vintage as the black cherry, cassis and warm earth suffused nose is quite ripe yet not roasted or lacking in freshness. The opulently rich medium-bodied flavors possess a decidedly suave, round and velvet-textured texture with enough underlying acidity to avoid any sense of undue weight on the enveloping finish that begins to tighten up as it sits on the palate. This is the point where you begin to notice the underlying structure as the richness of the mid-palate essentially hides them. The 2018 Célébration is one of those wines that could easily be enjoyed now (serve it on the cooler side) or held for up to a decade with good results. 2026+. Outstanding

Opening in the glass with aromas of sweet berries, cherries and plums framed by a deft application of toasty new oak, the 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Célébration (Maison Louis Jadot) is medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a fleshy core of fruit structured around rich tannins and succulent acids. It's a hearty, generous wine that should evolve nicely in the cellar. As usual, it's a blend of more than a dozen Beaune premiers crus. 2023-2040.

The nose is expressive and fragrant, with red cherry, tangerine, kumquat, fruit blossom and more as the wine responds to the air. This is one of those wines you can enjoy for minutes in the glass before taking sip but when you do, layers and layers of complexity await. The palate is exuberantly bright and fresh, showing rosewater, red cherry, redcurrant, and raspberry. The tannins could barely be more polished and fine. Acidity pricks the palate just enough to give lift and freshness without dominating. Cerebral and effortless, it delivers a truly elegant take on classic Beaune 1er Cru. The 2018 vintage produced such well-proportioned wines that it is tempting to enjoy this early on, but patience will be amply rewarded. 2022-2042
