In flying I have learned that carelessness and over-confidence are usually far more dangerous than deliberately accepted risks."

Help Save Part of Aotearoa's Aviation History

Many of you might have read the recent Stuff article on Bring Our Birds Home.  As with the fight to preserve our little airport, the community has to come together to preserve our aviation history for future generations.

Once this B747-419 is parted out, it is gone forever. Help us save this taonga. If you'd like to contribute to bringing the Queen of the Skies home, please click on the button below to donate.

Pilot Night: IFR and Helicopter Ops at PP Explained

Thursday July 15th, 7pm (New Date)

Most VFR fixed-wing pilots at Paraparam have shared the circuit with incoming IFR traffic and helicopters.

Ever wonder what all those IFR calls mean? Or why the helicopter circuit seems shorter and lower than the fixed-wing one?

Our next pilot night will explain all the ins and outs of IFR and Helicopter operations at PP for fixed-wing pilots. It will help you understand where the IFR approaches into the airport are located and what we should do to ensure adequate separation. You'll also learn how helicopter operations around the circuit differ from fixed-wing.

Tony's Weekend Weather

I am delighted to present you with … a lovely fine weekend, not just around Kapiti, but over most of the country. But first, a wee aviation weather question:

The first member to email fly@kapitiaeroclub.co.nz with the correct translation of the term -UP in this recent Queenstown METAR wins a $20 credit to their flying account.

METAR 280700Z AUTO 19021KT 160V240 18KM -UP FEW020/// BKN060/// OVC070/// 02/M01 Q1006

Current and former MetService employees are not eligible to compete.

Back to the weekend. A high will remain centred over central New Zealand delivering mainly fine weather apart from areas of morning low cloud and fog, particularly inland, where a few valleys may remain gloomy all day.  It’s also likely to be cloudy, with isolated showers, along the east coast of Northland and from East Cape to around Wairoa.

Kāpiti should be fine all weekend with never more than about 10kts of wind, mainly northerly.
Safety Message

Anyone who’s flown around the Kāpiti Coast and checked IFIS for the NOTAMs will know there are often several drone operation notifications. In order to minimise the volume of drone-related NOTAMs, there has been a change to how drone operation applications are treated at PP.

When a drone application is received, the operation is assessed and if no conflict is identified no NOTAM is issued.

This should help pilots having to read through several NOTAMs that are not really relevant to their operation. However, this means there could be drones operating in the MBZ at any time with no NOTAM raised.

As always, keep a good look out and remember the principles of VFR flying, SEE AND AVOID.
