Enjoy the best of the British countryside this summer!
With still some uncertainty over when we will fully open up after lockdown, there is still plenty to enjoy in the Vale of Pewsey this summer.
Walking, cycling, riding, paddle-boarding (with or without your dog!) or hiring a boat on the Kennet & Avon Canal.  Visiting historic Churches, enjoying the hospitality of some of the best country pubs or relaxing in peaceful and unique places to stay.
With the prospect of freedom on the horizon, there are lots of events being planned including Botfest at The Seven Stars in Bottlesford, the Great Poppy Party at The Crown in Bishops Cannings and Oakstock 21 at The Royal Oak in Pewsey.
And there's plenty coming up for the children as well, with lots of cookery classes at The Farm Cookery School and Campfire Cooking with Mindful Bakes.
With lots of other ideas for your visit, including picnics from Gastro Nicks and walking routes for you to download, you can be sure of plenty to do this summer.
We hope you enjoy this month's news and views from the Vale of Pewsey!
Join Ashley at WALX Wessex to learn to Nordic walk.  It's a great, fun way to keep fit and enjoy the glorious countryside.  Ashley organises fantastic walks over all sorts of terrain - and there's often a refreshment stop on the way!
And the winner is .....
Congratulations to Natalie Neal who won the fabulous Pewsey Vale prize in the North Wessex Downs Landscape Trust's online raffle!  Natalie has won an overnight stay at the gorgeous Crown & Anchor in Ham, including dinner and breakfast, a book "Walks from the Crown & Anchor", tickets and flour from Wilton Windmill and tickets for Crofton Beam Engines.

A summer postcard from Nick & Jane at Gastro Nicks

We have been busy in this strange Summer, and are looking forward to more sustained warm weather.

With this in mind we thought we would give you some ideas for entertaining outside and enjoying some Stay-Cation picnics.

We get deliveries of vegetables, seasonal fruits, salads and local artisan breads every week, which, together with our cheeses, freshly made savouries, olives and charcuterie form the basis for a wonderful picnic.

To complement this, our diverse selection of wines and other drinks are here for your enjoyment, with some in our chiller cabinet to take away and consume al fresco!

How about mixing up your BBQ by adding some fresh fish and seafood? It arrives at Gastro Nicks directly from the South West’s fish markets every Thursday and Friday and can be prepared to your requirements.

You can subscribe to our weekly Fish List by sending your email address to enquiries@gastro.co.uk We look forward to welcoming you at the Deli!

Best wishes, Nick & Jane

And you can find ideas on where to picnic on our website!

Marlborough College Summer School 2021
Sadly, this year's Summer School has been cancelled.  In the interests of the wellbeing of guests, staff and the local community, it was with a really heavy heart that the decision was taken not to proceed with this year's Marlborough College Summer School.

Amid uncertain circumstances, the team held out as long as they could, keen to give guests the best possible experience this summer. However, the further delay to the easing of restrictions announced by the Prime Minister means that it was no longer possible to continue with Summer School 2021 for a number of logistical and operational reasons.

The Summer School team plan to run a near identical programme next year from 10th July to 6th August 2022 with the same courses, accommodation and entertainment. If you were booked for 2021, they have reserved your place for Summer School 2022 and carried your total booking over. However, if you would prefer to be reimbursed instead, please email admin@summerschool.co.uk

Bookings for Summer School 2022 are intended to open from 1st September 2021. Please keep an eye on summerschool.co.uk  for further details.

Marlborough College thanks everyone for their continued support and looks forward to welcoming you to Summer School 2022, which promises to be worth the wait.

New Menu at The Dog & Gun in Netheravon

The Dog and Gun in Netheravon has recently come under new ownership following its head-to-toe renovation in the last few years. The next stage of its life will see it become a pizza pub.

The pub will serve a range of dishes, though mostly sourdough pizza, alongside local beers and good wine.

Ethan Davids, new custodian of the pub, said:  “We know that pizza isn’t for everyone, but we also know that it is for a lot of people. It complements a crisp pint perfectly and lends itself to more casual dining which is the route we’d like to go down. We think pizza is something that can be enjoyed as a family, with friends, or even with your date. Our pizza restaurant in Salisbury has been a wonderfully fun endeavour, and our view is that if we can bring a similar buzz to Netheravon, it’ll be great for everyone.”

The new menu offers some non-pizza dishes as well as tapas style starters such as nduja scotch egg, ox cheek and treacle croquettes, and padron peppers with chilli salt. The pizza itself relies on a patient dough making process and uses a traditional Neapolitan recipe. It’s a slow prove, fast cook concept, which makes the dough chewy and tasty and the crusts the best part.

Ethan added, “Together with most other hospitality venues in the local area, we’re desperate for great people to join us, so if you’re looking for work, or even to change things up a little in your life, get in touch. We’re a friendly bunch. It’s a friendly pub. And we’re always happy to show people the ropes.”

We're looking forward to checking out that new menu!
