🎇 How to celebrate the Fourth of July without fireworks

Plus: The Catch-22 of AC units.

By Grace Madigan

Hey there, it’s Thursday.

Today marks the reopening of Neumos/Barboza, and words can’t describe how excited your editor is to go see a live show for the first time in over a year and a half.

While the technical reopening party for both venues is tomorrow, their first live shows are tonight. And guess what? We’ve featured TWO of the artists who are on the lineups. While the Black Ends will take the stage at Neumos, I’ll be headed to Barboza to see Chong the Nomad.

I’ll let you know how it is, but until then, let me know what shows you’re looking forward to this summer and fall. Just hit reply to this email.

Now, onto the news...

Still fantasizing about colder times. ❄️| Tag @the_evergrey or use #theevergrey to be featured in our Instagram of the Day. (📸: @alex.farrell.photo

What Seattle is talking about

♨️  A greener alternative to traditional AC. This past weekend’s heat wave meant AC units were more in demand than a parking spot downtown on a summer day. However, environmentalists point out that AC units emit more carbon emissions and strain power grids, hence only worsening the climate change responsible for the heat. Instead, they’re urging folks to consider a heat pump, which uses less energy to heat and cool a space. (KUOW)

  • Related: King County emergency departments saw a total of 233 people visit their facilities for heat-related illness on Monday. Two people died from heat exposure. According to experts, these numbers are just a portion of the actual toll. (The Seattle Times)

🚌  Public transit is now running at full capacity. Following the lifting of social distancing restrictions, all seats will be available on Community Transit, King County Metro, Sound Transit, and Washington State ferries starting today. However, masks will still be required. (King County Metro)

🍴 Locksmith’s Bagel Bodega comes to Capitol Hill. The new bagel joint opens for business today at 10 a.m. out of the Nacho Borracho kitchen. Customers can choose from an assortment of offerings including a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich or a Korean-inspired take on the classic with gochujang bacon kimcheese. For now, the bodega will operate from Thursday to Sunday. (Capitol Hill Seattle Blog)

5 ways to celebrate the Fourth of July (minus fireworks)

The Fourth of July is this Sunday, and while COVID-19 restrictions were officially lifted across the state yesterday, most firework displays were already canceled earlier this year. And considering the PNW’s dry spell, it’s probably for the best. Fortunately, you don’t need fireworks to celebrate the holiday. We’ve rounded up five things you can do instead.

🥩  Grill some meats courtesy of Mamnoon. The Lebanese-influenced restaurant is offering a barbecue kit for four that includes smoked lamb shoulder and ground beef kefta with chips, fruit, and cookies for dessert. Order online and pick up on July 3.

🎵  Head over to the Blue Moon Tavern to celebrate its grand reopening. The free event marks the return of live music to the venue and will feature the 350’s and Moose Almighty. If you need further convincing of why the Blue Moon is an excellent way to spend your Fourth of July, revisit our profile on the historic dive bar.

🍸  There’s really nothing more “patriotic” than drinking. Which is exactly what you can do at the Mountaineering Club’s “Red, White, and Views” celebration. The rooftop bar is offering sparkling cocktails, a champagne cocktail slushie, oysters, and music.

⚾️  Take yourself out to the old ball game. The Mariners take on the Texas Rangers at home this Fourth of July, and there are still tickets available! Stadiums including Safeco have announced their return to full capacity, which means you can snag some nose bleed seats for cheap and still have enough leftover for an overpriced beer.

📺  If you’re not tired of virtual events, KING 5 is airing highlights of fireworks shows from years past. Tune in at 10 p.m. to watch the TV special which will include a sneak peek at Seafair celebrations planned for next year.
