Under the Withdrawal Agreement ratified by the EU and the UK, we have retained our rights to be treated equally to UK citizens, this includes equal:
These rights are conditional on your current immigration status.
I invite you to read our resource Citizens’ Rights have changed and bookmark this page with a summary table for your reference:
https://www.the3million.org.uk/rights-have-changed
If you or someone in your family hasn’t applied, including children or older people, please do so urgently under the late application guidance: https://www.gov.uk/settled-status-eu-citizens-families/applying-for-settled-status
The Government is allowing late applications after the deadline, but your rights will not be protected in full until you receive a decision.
If you, or someone you know, needs help for making the application, please contact the charity Settled. They have a network of OISC accredited advisors who can support you
2. Know how to prove your status
Proving status is the most important feature of how we live our lives in the UK, and it’s only done digitally so we recommend you familiarise yourself with the process.
The Work Rights Centre has a very good video to explain how to prove your status with the share code: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVRmCUFIWB0
You can access the Government View and Prove Your Immigration Status at https://www.gov.uk/view-prove-immigration-status
3. Report your problems
If you, or someone you know, have problems with your application, or proving your rights to work, live, study, access healthcare, housing or benefits, please do two things:
Visit our report-it page and choose the type of report and the language: https://www.the3million.org.uk/report-it
Why? It helps inform, shape and strengthen our advocacy.
You can read our interim report (December 2020 - June 2021) which is based on your experiences. https://www.the3million.org.uk/library
How? We're running a campaign on getting physical proof of status. You'll find easy instructions there on how to contact your MP on this, and other issues.

4. If you are an employer
As of today, there are important changes to the government’s right to work checks.
Employers are required to carry out right to work checks when recruiting new EU workers.
This requirement does not apply to existing employees. In fact, singling out employees on the basis of their nationality can constitute a form of discrimination that can have serious consequences on your business.
Once again, the Work Rights Centre has a very good video to explain how an employer can use the share code and view the candidate’s status: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qY37ENWAKVM

Today is the first day EU citizens are living under the rules of the EU Settlement Scheme. Whilst this is scary, and problems will arise, let’s not forget that Britain has integrated millions of foreigners in its history. Together, we can hold the UK Government accountable of any issues and demand to be treated fairly and equally, so that we and future generations can continue to say ‘This is our home’
