"THE MINDFUL MINUTE" (60 seconds is all it takes)
July 2021 | Volume 1, Issue 4
What's New
It has been a very busy month.
This month I took over as Chair for the Alternative Dispute Resolution Section for The Florida Bar. Looking forward to having a great year with the ADR Section while seeking to enhance its influence and impact on the ADR world.
I also enhanced my skills and dispute resolution tools by becoming a WIND Certified Umpire for the appraisal of property insurance claims. Likewise, I can now mediate all civil claims as I obtained my certification as a Florida Supreme Court Certified County Mediator. Less conflict, more resolution!
Finally, this month I am taking my non-profit, The Making History Project, on the road for an "American Heartland Tour". The tour will cross 15 States and cover over 5,124 miles for the purpose of obtaining oral history interviews of Veterans. These interviews compare and contrast combat trauma for Veterans across different eras. The interviews will be archived with the US Library of Congress as well as with the University of Florida Samuel Proctor Oral History Program.
A Resource
Given the theme of my trip this month to interview Veterans, the resource that I want to share with you is a fantastic exhibition, "Depicting the Invisible" by artist Susan J. Barron, that I saw at the National Veterans Museum.
Depicting the Invisible
In short, combat trauma is an invisible injury. Bringing greater awareness as to this issue is precisely why I conduct my oral history interviews of Veterans.
A Tip
The theme this month for July is to make a difference. Use July to find a purpose beyond your professional work, and help others. Not only does this make you a fuller person, but it also brings meaning to your life. Not everything can be about work all the time. We are, after all, human beings not human doers. When you do something that has purpose, that is bigger than yourself, it will compliment your career, and you will often find that it is not work at all. Each day, try to leave the world in a better place than what you found it.
If not now, then why?
Stay well,
Patrick Russell
