Experience #FLBS21:
Connecting Research, Education, and Adventure Out in the Field

Our outdoor 'classrooms' are bustling, the bookstore is open for business, and we’re officially a quarter of the way through our #FLBS21 Summer of research and learning in the Flathead Watershed! So far, students in our Aquatic Microbial Ecology and Field Ecology courses participated in a research rafting expedition on the Middle Fork Flathead River, gained first-hand experience collecting zooplankton samples with our Flathead Monitoring Program, ventured into Glacier National Park to examine the effects of forest fire on terrestrial, stream, and lake habitats, and investigated Tribal forest conservation, invasive tree diseases, dendrochronology, bumble bee nutritional ecology, and more!

Our interdisciplinary interns, meanwhile, have gained familiarity with the Bio Station, our research, and our watershed’s ecology. They now embark upon their diverse array of independent projects under the tutelage of their mentors, and as always we are excited to see what they discover and accomplish.

It’s been an incredible journey so far, and we have plenty of adventures ahead. Still, it never ceases to amaze us how fast that time can fly when we’re out exploring the ecological intersections of past, present, and future in the breathtaking surroundings of our amazing Flathead Watershed. This is freshwater research at its finest: A little science, a little sunshine, and another incredible opportunity to work alongside some amazing students while continuing to do our part to keep our waters clean and blue for generations to come!

A Corps of Strength:
Big Sky Watershed Corps Members Make a Positive Impact at FLBS and Beyond

Photo courtesy the Big Sky Watershed Corps
For the past four years, Big Sky Watershed Corps (BSWC) Members have partnered with Flathead Lake Biological Station researchers and educators to conduct meaningful work in the areas of watershed research, aquatic invasive species prevention, education, and outreach. These yearlong collaborations have helped BSWC Members gain first hand skills and real-world experience, and our FLBS research, monitoring, and education programs have all made significant strides as a direct result of our partnership with the BSWC program. We are proud to introduce our growing list of BSWC Members who continue to better the world around them, at FLBS and beyond!
Keaton Martin, Current FLBS BSWC Member
“Keaton has made an immediate impact for Monitoring Montana Waters. He has greatly increased our capacity to build the program and provide resources for volunteer monitoring groups in Montana. He also has been great to work with and has been very flexible in providing assistance with many different aspects of the MMW program.”
Rachel Malison, FLBS Assistant Research Professor and BSWC Site Supervisor
Abby Schmeichel, 2020 FLBS BSWC Member
“Abby did an excellent job with educational programming at FLBS as part of our FLARE K-12 program, especially with the changing COVID environment, and successfully met the variety of unanticipated tasks that were part of the very challenging year of 2020. She also created new invasive species lessons for future outreach events, and developed an interactive FLBS campus nature walk that will continue to be part of the educational programming at FLBS for years to come.”
Monica Elser, FLBS Education Liaison and BSWC Site Supervisor
Natalie Poremba, 2019 FLBS BSWC Member
“Natalie’s BSWC Membership with FLBS and the Crown Managers Partnership was a win-win-win. In working with experienced scientists and mid-level agency managers in this region, Natalie added value to everything she worked on, and brought fun new ideas to on-going projects. She incorporated all of her Big Sky Corp Member training from volunteer monitoring to creating maps and interactive outreach and communication tools like story maps, which are still being shared widely today.”
Erin Sexton, FLBS Senior Scientist and  BSWC Site Supervisor
Maggie Burham, 2018 FLBS BSWC Member
“Maggie was my first experience with the Montana Conservation Corps, and she taught me lot about the impassioned and brilliant future leaders who serve in the Big Sky Watershed Corps program. Maggie has a bright future ahead of her, and will continue to do a world of good wherever she goes.”
Phil Matson, FLBS Research Specialist and BSWC Site Supervisor

Safeguarding the Watershed:
NBC Montana Checks In with FLBS Associate Director Tom Bansak for Invasive Mussel Update

We were grateful for the opportunity to connect with NBC Montana’s Maritsa Georgiou last week to discuss the record number of mussel-infested boats found at check stations so far this summer. State and Tribal inspection stations intercepted 35 mussel-infested boats out of nearly 180,000 boat inspections during the entire 2020 summer season. This summer, prior to the start of July, 36 mussel-infested boats have already been intercepted out of 42,000 watercraft inspections. A big reason for the jump in numbers is the recent increase in out-of-state visitors, which is why we all need to do our part to help educate new residents and tourists on the importance of ensuring all boats are cleaned, drained, and dried before entering our pristine waters.
