Mural at Takoma Langley Crossroads Center

Submission Deadline:  July 2nd, 2021 by 11:59pm

Submit to: Carmen Dominguez-Estrada, cdominguezestrada@takomalangely.org

Introduction: The Takoma Langley Crossroads Development Authority (CDA) is a business association that manages the Takoma Langley Crossroads Commercial District in the City of Takoma Park, Maryland.  Our mission includes the maintenance and beautification of the commercial district.  One way we address this objective is through the commissioning of public art projects.  The CDA has previously commissioned 4 public murals, located on the walls of commercial properties in visible areas benefiting from activation.  We seek to commission an additional mural in the Crossroads at the Langley Park Post Office on Holton Lane.  The mural will be located on a brick wall adjacent to the parking lot.  The USPS building is in a prominent, havily trafficked area, especially via foot traffic, at the heart of Maryland’s International Corridor.  It contains a diverse and vibrant mix of immigrant businesses and customers and serves as a regional destination for international specialty goods and products.

Project Partners:  The CDA is working together with the property owner, JBG Smith and the City of Takoma Park

Goals:

-Enliven the façade of a 1950’s style suburban shopping plaza that has seen minimal changes over the past 50 year’s.  This mural project is part of a larger facade improvement plan for the shopping center.

-Install an engaging, placemaking mural that captures the eye of pedestrians on Holton Lane and automotive traffic along New Hampshire Ave and brands the Takoma Langley Crossroads as a unique, lively, and vibrant destination.

Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich Joined by State and Local Officials to Celebrate Latest Minimum Wage Increase for Montgomery County on July 1

County Executive Marc Elrich was joined by State and local officials, along with workers and community leaders, at the Wheaton Community Recreation Center to celebrate the increase of the minimum wage that went into effect in Montgomery County on Thursday, July 1.

Sponsored by then-County Councilmember Marc Elrich and signed into law on Nov. 17, 2017, Bill 28-17 raises the minimum wage incrementally, each July 1, reaching $15 per hour for large employers this year.

The number of workers employed by the business determines the amount of the increase. In 2021 the County’s minimum wage will rise to $15 for employers with 51 or more employees and $14 for employers with 50 or fewer employees; a small employer, with 10 or fewer employees, is required to pay $13.50 hourly. See informational notice here.

Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center Joins Montgomery County Partners for Animal Well-Being in Hosting Operation: Feline Freedom, a Fee-Waived Adoption Event

The Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCASAC) operated by the Montgomery County Office of Animal Services (OAS) will be holding a month-long adoption event from July 1 - July 31 where adoption fees will be waived for all cats and kittens. MCASAC’s Operation: Feline Freedom is sponsored by the nonprofit organization Montgomery County Partners for Animal Well-Being (MCPAW).

The summer months are a perfect time for people to welcome a new family member into their home. MCASAC will be launching the event with more than 50 cats and kittens available for adoption. New animals are made available every day.

Patrons may visit the shelter in person to adopt, or patrons can start the process online to reserve a spot to speak to a counselor. All potential adopters should review the Pre-Adoption Checklist prior to visiting or submitting a questionnaire online. Submitting a questionnaire does not reserve an animal for adoption and adoptions are first come, first served.

Guidelines for adoption, the pre-visit checklist, and the adoption questionnaire can be found at https://www.montgomerycountymd.gov/animalservices/adoption/howtoadopt.html.

Shelter hours of operation are 12 p.m. – 7 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday and 12 p.m. – 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The shelter is closed to the public on Wednesdays. The shelter will be closed to the public on July 4 and reopen on July 5.
