Special guests

Join your hosts Rebecca and Marlene, along with the following special guests:
  • Mary Whipple: Coxswain of the US Women’s 8+. A three-time Olympian, Mary has two Olympic gold medals from the 2012 London and 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Mary is building the future of rowing by teaching the next generation of coxswains with clinics and summer camps through her company, The 9th Seat.
  • John Kaitz: John has been a rowing coach for over 30 years. His coaching philosophy is simple and has proven successful: Mindful preparation with a disciplined work ethic is the key to success. His masters coaching career began at Marin Rowing Association in 1993, and includes coaching masters men and masters women.
  • Greg Benning: Greg started rowing at the University of Pennsylvania in 1980 and has been engaged in the sport ever since. He was elected to the USRowing Board in 2019. Greg was deeply involved in the creation of the NK EmPower Oarlock and is always trying to figure out how to make his sculling just one percent more efficient.

How it works

  • This event runs for three consecutive days, 7:00-8:00 pm EDT
    • Day 1: Learn. Then practice with your crew, in your boat, or on your erg.
    • Day 2: Learn more. Practice.
    • Day 3: Return for the final day to learn the finesse you need to perfect your racing starts.
  • Don't worry if you can't make all three days. We are recording every session.

  • On Land, a Balance Drill for the Water Think of this exercise on land as a risk-free drill to help with stability on the water. As your strength improves, the exercise can be modified to increase difficulty. Best of all, a "flip" on land is much easier to recover from!
  • Essential Drills for Blade Depth Controlling the oar in the water takes surprisingly little effort. In this article, Marlene details some drills to help improve your feel for the blade.
  • Condition-Free Technique Coined by the late Larry Gluckman, the term "condition-free technique" suggests that it's possible to cultivate clean bladework that enables you to row well, regardless of conditions. Working on the release and feather is an excellent place to start.
