New PhD candidates for the Humanities research schools
The research schools of the Faculty of Humanities (ACLC, AHM, ARTES, ASCA, ASH, and the interfaculty institute ILLC) have been working on recruiting new PhD candidates – one for each school. Four of six positions have now been filled, and two more (those who will work at ACLC and the ICLC) will be announced shortly. All will start in September 2021.

Colonial Citizens? Petitioning for Legislation in Early Modern Batavia
This project will investigate the political, legal and administrative aspects of early-modern colonial rule and foregrounds the political agency of Asian subjects in influencing policy-making in Batavia, the largest city in the Dutch Empire. Central is the practice of petitioning the colonial government, in order to represent or further the interests of one’s community or group. These petitions are examined to investigate popular politics, and will connect scholarship on petitioning and citizenship in European history to that of the colony, and formulate new perspectives on the concept of colonial ‘citizenship’ and colonial governance. Vany's first supervisor will be prof. dr. Remco Raben.

Ghent University awards two medals to Rens Bod
Rens Bod, Professor of Digital Humanities at the University of Amsterdam, recently received two academic awards: the Francqui Medal and a medal from Ghent University. He is awarded the honours as holder of the International Francqui Chair, which he held at Ghent University from February to June 2021. The chair is intended for high-level researchers who are highly active in their professional field. Read more

New issue History of Humanities
Issue 6.1 of 'History of Humanities' (Spring 2021) has been published. It contains a Theme section on “Sounds of Language—Languages of Sound”, a Forum section on “The Rise and Decline of ‘Colonial Humanities'”, two regular articles, 2 review essays, and 13 book reviews. Read the journal

Workshop Matter into Place

This online workshop ‘Matter into Place: Public Health and Urban Space in the Medieval Low Countries’ is organised by the ERC-project ‘Healthscaping Urban Europe’ and the Henri Pirenne Institute for Medieval Studies.
The workshop has contributions by Maaike van Berkel, Marc Boone, Janna Coomans, Yannick Devos, Lola Digard, Léa Hermenault, Frank Gelaude, Ward Leloup, Roos van Oosten and Barbora Wouters. Speakers will address various cities and combine disciplinary perspectives of history, archaeology, hydrology and micromorphology. Professor J.M. van Winter Stipend 2022
The board of the Stichting Gastronomische Bibliotheek invites students and researchers to submit requests for the Professor J.M. van Winter Stipend 2022. Deadline 15 August.
Each year, the Stichting Gastronomische Bibliotheek makes a stipend of €1000 available for research that makes particular use of the History of Food collection of the Allard Pierson, the heritage collections held at the University of Amsterdam. This research is intended to throw further light on a particular aspect of the history of food and drink. The stipend is to be used as compensation for travel, accommodation and research costs and must be fully spent within one year of allocation. Read more

Boekman Dissertatieprijs
The Boekmanstichting organises the Boekman Dissertatieprijs in collaboration with NWO for the fifth time. The best Dutch PhD research on art, culture and society will be awarded €10.000. The Boekman Dissertatieprijs aims to present PhD research on art, culture and society to a broad public. Deadline 15 September.
The Boekman Dissertation Prize, an initiative of the Boekman Foundation and NWO, is awarded once every three years to the best dissertation at a Dutch university in the working area of the Boekman Foundation. Dissertations from the year 2018 and later are eligible for the award in 2021. Read more

 The Royal Netherlands Institute in Rome (KNIR) provides scholarships to early career scholars who can benefit from a research stay in the academic hub of Rome. Rome’s many international research institutes, museums and libraries offer a vibrant academic climate fore specially Archaeology, Classics, ArtHistory, History, Anthropology, Political Science, Museology and Heritage studies - and the Humanities and Social Sciences at large. KNIR fellowship holders form an interdisciplinary, close-knit community, engaging in field and lab work, debates, workshops and excursions. Scholarships are open to (R)MA students, (prospective) PhD students and postdocs. Depending on the career stage and plan, the KNIR facilitates research stays from 2 up to 20 weeks.
