Further Proof - The right infrastructure attracts
The Outer Harbor Greenway has seen a spectacular increase in numbers since the City end of the route was completed in September 2019. The graph below shows month-by-month figures since a counter was installed at Belmore Terrace, in January 2018.
Seasonal fluctuations in the above graph muffle the overall trend.  The graph below, which adds up the number of cyclists in the 12 months from each February, shows the clear trend.

Once again concrete proof that Greenways attract users with all the economic benefits that active transport offers.
Have your say: proposed 12 month Outer Harbor Greenway detour
From Port BUG - "The City of Charles Sturt have called for community feedback on the proposed closure & detour of the Outer Harbor Greenway at Bowden for approx. 12 months.

An application has been received from developers for this closure to facilitate new housing construction at the ‘Nightingale Bowden’ site for one year from July 2021 to July 2022. The Greenway would be closed between Drayton Street and the Station Place Footbridge (see map below)." Port BUG Blog

Further details on this matter can be found on Council’s Have Your Say consultation website with written public comments invited and due by 26 July. You can also email comments to Catherine Blackmore (Admin & Consultation Officer) at: cblackmore@charlessturt.sa.gov.au

Unley BUG update
Report your trouble spots in Unley "Unley BUG has launched an online reporting form for cycling and walking trouble spots in the City of Unley. This could be for a dangerous intersection, difficult crossing or somewhere needing bike racks. With your input, we can help highlight these areas needing improvement and work with Council to advocate for better cycling and walking conditions." Could this be rolled out in other areas across Greater Adelaide?

Chair moving on - David has moved out of the Unley Council area so has relinquished his position as Unley BUG Chair. He has been instrumental in the success of this very active BUG group which had a number of wins in the Unley area. Bike Adelaide acknowledges David's commitment to active transport. Welcome to David Elliot acting Chair/Secretary.

Bike Friendly Café
In 2018, Proprietors Lance and Trudi, of the Wattle Park Bakery, (Kensington Rd) embarked on a major renovation project (with some assistance from the landlord)  to expand and transform the business to cater more for dine in patrons and welcome more customers outside too…… particularly cyclists with the renovation expanding the cycle parking with enough space to park 15 bikes.  Lance is a member of the Fat Boys Cycling Club and was hopeful that if he made the business more cycle friendly, then cyclists would be encouraged to stop for coffee on their regular rides.  Trudi and Lance are pleased to report that not only Fat Boys but other groups including The Skinny Lattes (female group) and the Big Cogs regularly stop and add colour to the venue.
Trudi and Lance, based on their experience, would encourage any cafe or other retail business to cater for cyclists. They become regular customers, brighten our days and enable us to sustain employment.
Advocacy update - what have we been put to?
We met with MLC Robert Sims to discuss his proposed Walking and Cycling Commissioner, his concept is based on similar roles in London, Manchester and Scotland, with the London appointed Commissioner in 2016 resulting in a significant uptake of active transport.  After fruitful discussions Bike Adelaide together with Walking SA and the Active Transport Coalition will be writing to both sides of the political spectrum to bolster support for Robert's concept.

Vice President Fay Paterson worked into the early hours of the morning to complete our submission on proposals for Chief St, Brompton. You may recall that in last months Pedal Update there were three concepts up for discussion with two involving either a shared use path or an on road bike lane. Clearly the separated concept was Fay's favourite (with some further enhancements).

Donations welcome
Recently Bike Adelaide received a donation of $500 from the Adelaide Community Bicycle Workshop/Bikes For Refugees, many thanks to Mike Brisco for this generous donation.

Bike Adelaide is able to offer free membership and continue its advocacy work through both donations and earnings from interest, the dramatic drop in interest rates has had quite an effect on our income stream. If you would like to help us out here's a link to our donations page.
Fossil Free SA - read about the campaign and tell us your thoughts
While here at Bike Adelaide we focus on infrastructure that encourages active transport and all the benefits that stem from people walking and cycling, here's a group of cyclists focusing on the environment. Article was written by Robyn, Fossil Free SA.

"Fossil Free SA held its second group ride in late May. After brekky at Plant 4, we hopped on the train with our bikes at Bowden. One bike fell over on the journey, leaving us to wonder why Adelaide trains can’t be fitted with secure bike racks! At Grange we met more of our crew and then pedalled along the Coast Park Path to Brighton.

Fossil Free SA combines cycling with visual campaigning to raise awareness that fossil fuel company Santos is not a suitable sponsor for the Tour Down Under. We wear our #BreakAwayFromGas hi vis vests, attach signs and stickers to our bikes and gather petition signatures via QR code from cyclists and pedestrians as we go.

Our group aged 32 – 81 years young, made short campaigning stops at Henley Beach, Glenelg and Brighton. People were keen to chat about the climate crisis, the need to stop new gas projects and about ‘sportswash’ – the way companies like Santos try to clean up their image by sponsoring sporting events.
Most of us are recreational cyclists who have recently got back on our bikes, so off-road cycles have been a fantastic way to build confidence. Keep in touch with us and join our next ride!

Sign the #BreakAwayFromGas petition. Follow the Fossil Free SA Facebook page and watch our new campaign video
