 Prayer Boxes

Do you know someone that would benefit from the gift of prayer? We have Parcel Prayer boxes for you to take!

Remove one piece a paper with a scripture on each day and say a prayer after reading it. You can then put it in your pocket to carry it around with you the entire day. Whenever you need strength and reassurance of our Lord’s love for you, it will be in your pocket to touch/or reread to be comforted.

Pick yours up right outside the church office on the countertop.

 Book Study Opportunity

Join Christine Hiester in a 6 week contemplative book study on The Return of the Prodigal Son by Henri Nouwen.

"A chance encounter with a reproduction of Rembrandt’s The Return of the Prodigal Son catapulted Henri Nouwen on an unforgettable spiritual adventure. As Nouwen reflects on Rembrandt’s painting in light of his own life journey, he evokes a powerful drama of the classic parable in a rich, captivating way that is sure to reverberate in the hearts of readers. Nouwen probes the several movements of the parable: the younger son’s return, the father’s restoration of sonship, the elder son’s resentfulness, and the father’s compassion. The themes of homecoming, affirmation, and reconciliation will be newly discovered by all who have known loneliness, dejection, jealousy, or anger. The challenge to love as God loves, and to be loved as God’s beloved, will be seen as the ultimate revelation of the parable known to Christians throughout time, and is here represented with a vigor and power fresh for our times." (from the book summary)

In person, 9:30-11am Saturdays beginning on July 17 in room 210. Contact Christine at christinehiester73@gmail.com to sign up.

 Calling All Ringers & Singers!

Reverberation Ringers and Chancel Choir fall Information– participants needed!

It has been so incredibly wonderful to make music with our groups again this last six weeks, as the state, local, and Linworth community guidelines have slowly shifted to accommodate meeting in person. We still have more to this journey, but the movement has been positive as the number of fully vaccinated increases.

This Sunday our Ringers and Singers shared music together in the service for the last time until fall. We stretched our strange and brief musical season through June, since it had been so long apart, and the fall choir and handbell season will be a normal and exciting one!

There’s no better time to get involved with the music of Linworth! Chancel Choir welcomes singers, ages high school through adult, and would especially benefit from tenor and bass voices as we come into the fall. We sing varied music throughout the year, plan special events in the Christmas and Easter seasons, and are open to those who might be seasonal singers because of travel or other commitments.

Our Reverberation Ringers choir is looking for a player to help in the bass bells section. Ringers need to have experience reading music, but we will teach you handbell technique. We have a great time building community and beautiful music each week!

  • Reverberation Ringers meets from 6:15-7:15 each Thursday during the choir year and plays in the service once per month.
  • The Chancel Choir meets from 7:30-9pm each Thursday after bells and sings to support the service most weeks from September through May.

If you are interested in joining us, each group is hosting a fall retreat day at the end of August. The Chancel Choir retreat will be Saturday, August 28th from 9:30am-1:30pm and will include lunch. The Reverberation Ringers retreat will be Sunday, August 29th, from 12:30 through 4pm and will be a joint event with Powell United Methodist Church’s handbell choir, and will also include lunch.

Please contact Christine Hiester to sign up: christinehiester73@gmail.com

 Stephen Ministry

Where Does Stephen Ministry Get Its Name?

In Acts 6, we are told that the number of believers were multiplying rapidly, and the disciples spent much of their time dealing with discontented people and individuals who felt they were being discriminated against. For example, these included widows and those that didn’t have enough food.

The disciples decided they should spend more of their time preaching, teaching, and in prayer, so they selected seven men to handle the daily business of administering to others. These men were wise, well thought of by everyone, and full of the Holy Spirit. Stephen, one of the seven, was unusually strong in faith and did spectacular miracles among the people. Stephen was later falsely accused of speaking against Moses and God and was stoned to death by the Jewish leaders. Stephen Ministry is named for Stephen—one of the first laypeople commissioned by the apostles to care for the community.

The pastors at Linworth UMC, as well as in other congregations, cannot care for all of its members individually on a regular basis. The task was challenging to do so before the pandemic. With the protocols of COVID19 in place, along with the need for social distancing, caregiving has become even more difficult.

Stephen helped to meet the growing needs of the early church. In the same way, Stephen Ministry expands the caring capacity of congregations. As Stephen shared the spirit of Jesus, Stephen Ministers bring Christ’s healing love to those who are hurting.

If you would like to talk with a Stephen Minister or are interested in possibly becoming a Stephen Minister, please click here to submit your inquiry, or contact the church office at (614) 336-8485.
