9AM on Monday July 12th, the Calgary Canoe Club (CCC) will welcome new athletes. Coaches will greet the athletes on the field, near the entrance of the canoe club. Tables and signs will indicate where they will sign in and where they will gather. A coach will escort them to a first-day meeting zone and give instructions.
Athletes who bike to practice can leave their bikes on the bike racks by the club.
If not able to attend the first day
Please let us know if the athlete will not participate on July 12th, so we are not looking for them. We will greet them on the next session day, give them a warm welcome, and show them the basics.
If not attending Day 1, please send an email in advance to sprint@calgarycanoeclub.com with the athlete name so staff does not contact you when they do not show.
Weather Cancellations
Weather may force athletes off the water. In 2021 we may not have access inside the building for alternate activities. Therefore, in the case of extreme cold or electrical storms for the majority of the day we will cancel activities at the Club. Where possible make-up days will be available to athletes. We strive to communicate weather cancellations within 24 hours via email and post announcements at www.calgary canoe club.com.
Lunch procedures
Athletes are active all day and should ensure they bring a healthy lunch and snacks. Refrigeration is not offered for lunch storage, plan lunches accordingly. All age groups have a supervised lunch hour and coaches take attendance before lunch and after. Unless otherwise informed by parents, the athletes are expected in their scheduled training session.
With consistent practice, athletes should be able to:
Safely group up on-water at a meeting point
Self-rescue from the shoreline
Learn how to self-manage a simple to moderate training workout
Use a personal digital watch to run time
Engage in 'team' communication on water, through wash-ride practices and leapfrogging games
Feel confident in the foundations of paddling technique
...To thrive at the Canoe Club, athletes should bring:
A PFD (Personal Flotation Device). Please try to purchase your own if possible.
A water bottle, running shoes and flip-flops (dock shoes)
Appropriate clothing for the weather (if cool - cozy clothes and 1 set of other paddling clothes, as well as clothes you don't mind getting wet!)
Sunscreen
A lunch, snacks
Water-resistant digital watch for use in training activities is beneficial
It is best if athletes have a single training bag to hold all their belongings.
A typical day will have athletes experience kayaks, canoes, and a land activity session.
Note: It is best to avoid bringing expensive items to the Canoe Club. We do not have secured storage space for bags. Storage space is provided on the deck under tents.
Due to the need to be on schedule, late arrivals and mid-practice departures may not be possible as groups are training and coaches cannot leave the group to drop off or pick up athletes. Please do your best to arrive on time. If your athlete has an appointment in the AM, please have them come for the 12:30 PM start; if they have a PM appointment, please pick your athlete up by 12:30 PM.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. We aim to respond to emails within 24 hours. Parents should alert the coaches if they're not attending a particular day or session. Email to sprint@calgarycanoeclub.com.
Thanks for your attention, and we can't wait to welcome you to our team!
Wishing you a great summer of Canoe Club life,
Your team at the Calgary Canoe Club
