In late July of 2020, a fellow author approached me to solicit support for an auction to assist with medical expenses for needed surgery. I offered up a few signed copies of books and also took a recommendation to auction off the privilege of naming a character in a future novel. I’d never had experience before with this type of auction but offered it anyway, and I’m so glad I did. Not only did it raise more funds than I had imagined, but it also led me to a new friendship and Affinity’s newest author K.L. Gallagher.
K.L. is a civil litigation attorney in California and had been playing ice hockey for over 20 years despite growing up in the middle of the Southern California desert. She captained more teams than she could count and met her wife when she decided to play on a women’s travel team in 2007. Unfortunately the pandemic cut off any further access to the ice rink and without hockey serving as her life’s counterbalance to her heavy workload, she felt there was no real outlet to express herself and was slowly losing her identity outside of the office. She thought about channeling her energy into other things to keep busy but she never considered writing a novel until now.
When notified that K.L. had won the auction, I was very excited to contact her to discuss the name and character she had in mind. Little did I know at the time, K.L. had the entire story of this character plotted in her dreams. After discussing the character and discovering her passion for the story, I proposed she write the story herself and offered my support. At first, K.L. was hesitant as she was worried about her lack of experience writing more than legal briefs over the past fifteen years. But once I offered to co-author it with her and assured her I would be there every step of the way, she pushed her fears aside and we agreed to co-author a novel, Hat Trick, scheduled to be launched October 1, 2021, through Affinity Rainbow Publications.
Janelle Leblanc, a hockey star turned professional coach, and Alex Hawthorne, an no-nonsense and ambitious lawyer, created more than a beautiful story together. They inspired a talented young author to write the story of her dreams.
I was honored and inspired by the passion K.L. had for this story, and I’m confident Hat Trick will be the beginning of her writing career. I hope readers will enjoy Janelle and Alex’s story, Hat Trick, based on giving love a second chance when both women had given up on romance. Alex and Janelle plunged headfirst in their careers, hoping they would be enough, only to realize the woman of her dreams was staring back at her. Together they work through fears and obstacles to forge their relationship.
