A Church for Circular Head - Making Disciples of Jesus

JULY 2021
The Not So Minor Prophets

I hope that after hearing from Hosea and Joel you can see why we have called this series the not so minor prophets. This often neglected part of God’s word has a great deal to say to us, and I pray that God will use it to both convict us of our own need to turn back to him, but to also fill us with the hope of the life to come living in his presence.

Some of you have started reading these last 12 books of the Old Testament which is very encouraging to hear. Another idea is to read some of the historical books of the Old Testament to hear the background story of what the prophets were talking about. 1st & 2nd Kings will take you from the death of King David, right way through to the exile of Judah to Babylon. Ezra & Nehemiah will fill you in on life after the return from exile. Esther will give you a taste of what life was like under the Persians.

Annual Meeting & Electoral Roll
Annual meeting time is just around the corner, where among other things we elect our Parish Council. In our 3 year cycle, this is also the meeting that we vote for our Synod Representatives (Synod is the annual meeting of the Diocese), our Nomination Committee (who have the important task of finding a replacement for me if that need were to arise). Please be prayerfully considering who should take on these ministries. This should also serve as a reminder that you need to have signed our parish roll in the past few months to be able to vote/be voted for in this meeting. By the time you next hear me talking about this it will most likely be too late (let the reader understand).

Mission Box
I was encouraged to see that we more than doubled our (albeit rather modest) target for the last financial year in giving towards mission. Alongside some other funds previously given, it meant we were able to give away just over $5500 each to TEAR and CMS.

With TEAR we are particularly supporting their ministry in ‘hard places’ where they are supporting communities suffering from poverty and persecution.  And to Maurice and Amanda in Cambodia, you can read a brief update from them on the next page.

Note:  Tuesday is Joel’s day off, but he can be contacted if an important situation arises.
Kids Church
At Kids Church we are looking at two minor prophets: Jonah & Malachi. Last week Sam taught us about how Jonah prayed whist he was in the big fish. Here is Sam in the belly of the big fish. Ask the kids about some of the things that Sam had in the fish
Memory Verse
“God commands all people everywhere to repent.” Acts 17:30b

Maurice & Amanda
(Church Missionary Society) in Cambodia
Let me ask you a question, what would you do if you were preparing for bed and you heard someone cry out, "Snake, snake!!"?  Well, a few weeks ago one of our students was doing just that when he heard the cry, so he raced outside into OUR YARD and wrestled a 3 metre python and locked it into a cage.  Let me ask you another question, what would you do with this creature that you'd captured?  Well, we marinated ours and cooked it on the barbie! A little tough, but delicious, none the less.

Give thanks

  • For the granting of our 1 year visa.
  • For Maurice's language tutor who has been meeting with him face to face.
  • For the covid restrictions being mostly lifted, allowing people to return to work.
  • For almost 95% of Phnom Penh residents receiving their vaccine already.

Please pray

  • For our friends in Siem Reap, a family of 5, who all have covid.
  • For the students here at the Bible College who are finishing their studies in a few weeks and returning to their provinces to serve their local churches.
