Notes from the Editor

Aloha friends of SOKO. We have some exciting news!

We are adding two new members to the SOKO ‘ohana, and welcoming back one of our founding members, who has not participated in the Tour for the past few years. We couldn’t be happier to introduce Monica Guckenheimer (quilter and fabric artist), Kabira Lyon (painter), and Jill Ami Meyers (silk painting). You will be hearing more about them in future issues, and of course they will be participating in the Studio Tour in  February, where you will get to meet them in person and see their beautiful work.

ANDREA PRO
From “Doodles” to fine art, celebrating the beauty of Hawai’i

The margins of my school tablets were filled with doodles of mushrooms, flowers and cats when I was a kid. This was a big problem for my parents and teachers. I'm happy to say that now my doodling is called fine art and it's a great source of joy and pleasure for me and my clients.

My primary inspiration and the focus of my art is to tell a visual story of the life of the land, sea, flora and culture of Hawaii. I'm surrounded by inspiration where I live on a beautiful farm overlooking Kahalu'u Bay in Kona on Hawaii Island, where we grow coffee and macadamia nuts. I volunteer with local reforestation and native species conservation programs where I get to work closely with biologists and botanists.

From the moment I took my first woodcut printmaking workshop at SKEA over 20 years ago I've been carving and printing detailed images that feature Hawaii's most endangered species.

I'm all about the details. I want you to notice the ruffled petals of the Ko'oloa'ula hibiscus and be surprised by the huge bulbous wrinkled seed pods made by this delicate flower.

My original woodcut prints and reproductions are displayed in many private homes, resorts and public spaces, and even in an airport on an isolated island. My newest passion is learning surface pattern design using Adobe Illustrator. I'll continue to create original art, and I'm also enjoying this new direction of collaborating with companies to create designs for home decor, apparel, accessories and other products.

Watercolors as Smooth as Silk

How lucky am I to have the privilege of living in one of the most charming parts of Big Island in the most beautiful place in the world. I get to do what I love most, to paint the magnificence of nature surrounding me. Whether it is a sunbeam penetrating blue waters lighting up the neon gold of a yellow tang, or the pure white petals of a gardenia right after the rain, or the golden hue painted on the side of the mountain as the sun sinks into the Pacific. There is no limit to the beauty that I witness every day. My paintings are an expression of the world where I live.

My father, an artist, mentored me. He taught me how to draw with perspective and how to see the world through the eyes of wonder. I have lived on the Big Island for over 40 years, and that lens of wonder has never faded. I am a long-standing member of SOKO and have participated in every art tour since its conception.

I taught myself watercolors. I use silk painting techniques and other mediums to create the lush color of the natural world in my paintings. I make my giclee prints and sell greeting cards that are available at Island Naturals and Kaya’s. You can see my work on Facebook under Pamela Colton Thomas-Radosevich and through www.sokoartists.com as well. My website is being updated so that any inquiries can reach me at pamradosevich@gmail.com. I ship my work.
