Rwanda NCD Alliance is set to host National NCD Conference in November 2021

This is the biennial multidisciplinary conference about NCDs organized by Rwanda NCDA that will be held to reduce NCDs and related challenges and establish the UHC for NCDs advocacy plan. This conference will bring together multi-sector health and non-health actors, including policy and lawmakers, policy implementers, health professionals, researchers, academicians, civil society, NCD Alliances from different countries, and people living with NCDs.

'Drink water!' - Ronaldo shuns Coca-Cola with unexpected health advice

On Tuesday, 15 June 2021, when Ronaldo sat down for the Euro 2020 press conference, he removed two bottles of Coca-Cola from the desk in front of him. His attempt was considered as a catalyst and game-changing as a global role model for the young generation acting on NCDs.

World No Tobacco Day 2021

The World No Tobacco Day 2021 celebrated under the theme ”commit to quit” focused on spreading awareness about the dangers of using tobacco and how several health problems can be better tackled or averted when one quits smoking. Under the support of Rwanda NCD Alliance, Rwanda Pharmaceutical Students Association (RPSA), Rwanda Medical Students Association (MEDSAR), and Organization for Tobacco Alcohol and Drugs Abuse Control (OTADAC) representatives appeared at ISANGO TV in a talk show to highlight the role of youth in fighting against dangers of tobacco use.

The future of cancer care in Kigali

31 May 2021, the City of Kigali, Rwanda Biomedical Centre (RBC) and City Cancer Challenge Foundation (C/Can) jointly hosted a three-day retreat to accelerate the finalisation of key documents that will shape the future of cancer care for the city and country at large in the priority areas of Quality of cancer care, Pathology, Imaging, Palliative care, Medical Oncology, and Surgery.

Civil Society Solidarity Fund on NCDs and COVID-19

NCD Alliance reported the Civil Society Solidarity Fund on NCDs and COVID-19 basing on the efforts of the 20 NCD alliances, including Rwanda NCD Alliance through East Africa NCD Alliance that were recipients of the fund in 2020.

World Hypertension Day 2021

Virtually, RNCDA joined the rest of the World to mark World Hypertension Day 2021 to raise awareness about hypertension (a major cause of premature death worldwide), risk factors and call the general public for knowing their blood pressure status by reaching out to the nearest health facilities for screening. Rwanda Biomedical Centre joined and applauded the work done by RNCDA and witnessed the capacity of Hypertension screening, starting at Health Centre level.

Rheumatic Heart Diseases Awareness

In a bid to raise awareness and early detection of Rheumatic heart diseases, Rwanda NCD Alliance, Team Heart Rwanda, Rwanda Heart Foundation, and Rwanda Biomedical Centre conducted 1-month screening outreach activities in Western and Southern Provinces that emphasized young people, especially in secondary schools, as well as providing diagnostic skills to Nurses.

RTV&RNCDA Fitness Show

During the COVID19 pandemic period, sports activities and facilities have been restricted, and others were temporarily closed. Knowing the critical role of sports and physical activities in NCDs prevention and control, we have proposed a new approach to improve access to virtual physical exercises through live demonstration and healthy life education program on Television and Social media platforms. So, RNCDA partnered with Rwanda Broadcasting Agency in bringing the FITNESS SHOW PROGRAM to your televisions since June 5, 2021, from 8 to 9:00 am.

Obesity, NCDs and Lifestyle

In line with educating the entire public about the consequences of overweight/obesity and supporting women in the weight loss process, Care For Them and Wellness Organisation is presenting a 90 days weight loss challenge themed "Mission Slim n' Fit" on Rwanda Television every Saturday 3:30 pm - 3:55 pm and Tuesday 9:30 am - 9:55 am. A number of ladies (with above 90 kgs) were selected to participate in this mission.

Sports and elderly people

June 06, 2021, concurrently, the Rwanda NCD Alliance team during Kigali Car Free Day met the senior generation (above 50 years old) members of Club NGWINONAWE committed to preventing NCDs through sports & physical activities. It was an opportunity to discuss different initiatives carried out by the club and receive NCDs expertise from the RNCDA team regarding NCDs prevention and control as their daily undertake.

The National Cancer Survivors’ Day 2021

The first week of June, American visiting volunteer medics partnered with Breast Cancer Initiative East Africa to raise awareness about cervical cancer in communities from the districts of Kirehe and Huye. In these two districts where BCEAI’s initiative dubbed ‘One Smartphone per Village’ aimed at using technology to enhance awareness around breast cancer, it is being carried out.

Transport and Environment

In partnership with Guraride Rwanda, May 26, the City of Kigali has embarked on a campaign to help reduce carbon emissions, pollution, and traffic congestion by using alternative means of green transportation that is safe, affordable, and environmentally friendly.

Our Views, Our  Voices Initiative

Since April, RNCDA is conducting a series of community conversations and consultative meetings with people living with a diverse range of NCDs and their care partners to gather insights on their needs and key challenges, priority asks, and understanding their views on being meaningfully involved in NCD responses as primary beneficiaries and those with first-hand experiences.  Insights from people living with NCDs will help us build a National Advocacy Agenda for People Living With NCDs in Rwanda, which is expected to be launched and disseminated in November 2021.
