DNANZ BULLETIN JUNE 2021

EDITORIAL:

Dear Dreamers,

Welcome to our first winter DNANZ bulletin for 2021.  Hopefully, you have all been part of our population who have not been affected by winter colds and bugs.  Health practitioners tell us that COVID caution has kept the usual winter flus away.  With vaccine roll outs starting we hope to see light at the end of the end of the tunnel in the near future.

This bulletin will be unique in that, apart from the first article by Margaret Bowater, it will be mainly featuring synopses of seminars that will be presented at our October conference.

  • Margaret Bowater explains in the first article how far dreamwork has come since its infancy with Freud and Jung.  The technology available in the twenty-first century such as computers and brains scanners has opened the field up as a science.  The extent of this is clear in the fact that it is now offered as university courses and even degrees.
  • The DNANZ Conference will be opened by two speakers – our founder, Margaret Bowater with co-founder and first editor, Dr. Kevin Dobbyn. Kevin will present on the soul’s journey and the place dreams have in finding our true selves.  Margaret will be tracing the history of the rise of dreamwork as a science.
  • After the Keynote speakers the programme will offer a range of workshop choices.  In the first part of the programme delegates can choose one of three workshops:  Margaret Toland will discuss the process of using havening in dreamwork with trauma; Jennifer McGarry will tell her own personal story of growth through dreamwork and how it can awaken our true selves; and Lynette Papp will present case studies of dreamwork with teenage clients and how that can contribute to safety and growth in the often turbulent lives of her young clients.
  • The next group of choices in the programme will feature three options:  the Wellington branch of DNANZ will provide  an interactive group workshop using participants’ dreams.  They will also explain how they use dreamwork as a peer supervision tool in their counselling practices.  Marion Hammond will demonstrate self-exploration through action methods and Hillary Lovelace will present on end of life dreams and how significant they can be as potentially profound messages for the living.
  • Finally, there is notification of Playback Theatre’s action evening workshop.
We hope that if you have not already enrolled for the conference that these tasters may inspire you.

Dreamwork as a Science                                        Margaret Bowater
  • Did you know that human beings spend about one-twelfth of our lifetime in Rapid-Eye-Movement Sleep, dreaming? That we dream from before birth till we die? That not only humans but all mammal brains show this pattern?
  • What then does dreaming do for us, to justify this proportion of our life-energy?
A picture containing mapDescription automatically generated     Much of the Western literature about Dreaming in previous decades was derived either from Freud, who emphasised its origin in primitive urges; or from Jung, who opened a wide frame of reference to personal and collective mythology. While both were brave pioneers in recognising the influence of unconscious levels of the mind, neither of them had heard of post-trauma impacts on mental health; or brain-scanning to show different parts of the brain at work.
  • Nor did they have access to computer programmes which could enable us to collect and study large samples of dreams from different cultures, genders, ages, religions, historical sources, paranormal dreams, and more specific experiences, such as depression or brain-damage. Nor did they envision the rapid growth of lay dream-sharing groups around the world, tapping into dreams as a constant source of personal insight and growth.
  • Many new theories of dreaming have emerged since the 1980s, each of them tending to highlight a specific aspect, eg Gestalt therapists the emotions; Cognitive Therapists the beliefs; Evolutionary psychologists the survival purpose; Transpersonal spiritual awareness; and so on; not to mention the Neurologists who concluded dreams were simply caused by random electrical firings of the brainstem!
  • Logo, company nameDescription automatically generatedSince 1983, when the International Association for the Study of Dreams was started in Berkeley, California, a dedicated group of researchers have been producing articles in the academic journal Dreaming, running annual Conferences, and publishing books and a magazine Dreamtime, to share new findings across the field, and raise public awareness of the potential of dreamwork. Several American Universities now offer courses in Dreamwork, even Degrees.
  • At our DNANZ Conference in October this year, I will give a keynote  address about “The Rising Science of Dreamwork,” offering a brief survey of the major developments.
Dr Kevin Dobbyn, fms.

The Rising Science of Dreamwork – from Freud to Brain-Scanning
A picture containing person, wall, indoor, smilingDescription automatically generatedIn this Keynote presentation on Saturday morning, Margaret will survey the most prominent figures (with photos) in the development of Dreamwork as a  Western scientific discipline. We will see how Freud, Jung and Moreno laid different foundations, and how many researchers and practitioners have continued to refine our understanding during the last 50 years. Sleep Labs, Content Analysis, Trauma research, Parapsychology, Neuroscience, Computer databases, among others, have all contributed to the overall picture today.
Margaret was the Foundation President of the Dream Network A-NZ, and is currently the Secretary.  She continues to run Dreamwork training courses at the Mercy Spirituality Centre in Epsom, Auckland. She will have copies of her recent book for sale: “Healing the Nightmare – Freeing the Soul.”

Dreamwork using Havening Touch
In my presentation I will present the theory underlying Havening, a Neuro-Psycho-Sensory Therapy based on the fields of neuroscience and neuro-biology. It shows how a traumatic event, which is inescapable, is encoded in the amygdala, and the activation of emotions and physical stress responses then become triggered.  Such events can be presented in dreams. Understanding this theory and practice has shown me the enormous benefits of Facilitated-Self Havening Touch and in particular Facilitated Havening.  Because of the close proximity to the client I’m aware that there is an enhanced sense of care and compassion experienced by the client and within me, which increases the healing process.  I will be presenting Dreamwork/Havening from clients’ work. Examples:  A traumatic event in childhood; Working with Grief; Building resilience with a new outcome.
Marg Toland was a Foundation member of the Dream Network A-NZ, and its first Financial Secretary. She has a part-time counselling practice at Friendship House in Manukau City.

DREAMS AS GUIDES to LIFE TRANSITIONS
Jeni will tell her story of change recorded through a process of dreaming, beginning with a recurring childhood nightmare. She will show how science backs dreaming as a useful tool in the process of change, referring to writings by Carl Jung, James Hollis, Edward Whitmont, Margaret Bowater and others. Dreams can be beacons that help us to wake up to becoming our True Selves, in the context of  our whole world in the process of a major transition.

WINDOWS OF OPPORTUNITY
Lynette is highly experienced in working with teenagers’ dreams. Having been a High School counsellor for over 15 years, she has been able to utilise her dreamwork training with students. In this presentation she will discuss some of the research on teens and their dreams, plus two of her own in-depth case-studies. In one case the nightmares revealed a serious risk of suicide that had not emerged in previous sessions. The other case tracks a disabled young client with whom Lynette worked for five years. Gradually the dream therapy helped the teen move from despair to achievement and hope. Another teen client said her dreamwork opened “windows of opportunity.”

Patricia, Sharman, Jill, Karen and Marian will explain how they work together as a peer-supervision group, and will demonstrate the process. They say, “We will give you a chance to practise too. If you work with clients and have a client dream you have permission to share and would like to work with during the session, please bring it with you.”
The members of this group are all trained counsellors who hold the Certificate in Applied Dreamwork, and have been meeting regularly for six years.
