Locals fuming over construction waste dumping in Auckland's Hobsonville

Hobsonville residents banded together for a clean up drive over the weekend, frustrated over construction waste dumping which resulted in streets and parks being littered with pieces of concrete and polystyrene, Stuff reports. Upper Harbour Local Board spends over $50,000 to employ a staff member to advise builders to tidy up their waste, and claim there's been some improvement. However, Auckland Council identifies construction and demolition as the biggest sources of waste in the region, with 40% going to landfill.

Auckland crime trend: Police warn about vehicle bag snatchers

Thieves are using a terrifying tactic to snatch bags from unsuspecting shoppers - and it's been captured on CCTV, NZ Herald reports. Police are investigating a series of bag snatches recently, particularly in the Botany and Papatoetoe areas. Counties Manukau police warn that thieves are blocking parked cars from reversing out of their car parks, before opening passenger doors and grabbing handbags from the front seat. Sergeant Nicolas Jensen says the police are taking the matter very seriously, also noting, "Don't carry heaps of cash on you; when you get in your car, lock your doors. Put your handbag under your front seat."

Auckland's latest 'critically' filthy restaurants

Auckland's latest filthy restaurants have been revealed in a horrifying list, detailing infestations and unclean premises, Newshub reports. There were eleven recipients of E grades, while 37 restaurants got D grades from Auckland Council between March 8 and June 30 for failing to have their outlets up to scratch. Some of those who made the list include Chargrill Box in Auckland Central, Wins Diner in Otara, Yuema Malaysian Restaurant in Albany, Cable Bay Vineyards and Thai Kitchen Takeaway in Mount Roskill and Herne Bay Thai Cuisine - mostly due to cockroach infestation and being dirty and unhygienic.

National MP Mark Mitchell not ruling out Auckland mayoralty run

National MP Mark Mitchell is not ruling out the possibility of running for the Auckland mayoralty next year, but says he is focused right now on bringing stability to the party caucus, NZ Herald reports. Mitchell, 53, has joined a growing list of National Party figures, including former Cabinet ministers Paula Bennett and Nikki Kaye, being talked about as contenders to end Labour's stranglehold on the Super City Mayoralty. Currently the MP for Whangaparaoa, Mitchell was born on Auckland's North Shore, is a former policeman, worked as a security contractor in Iraq and was a former Minister of Defence.

Auckland’s world-class waterfront opens

Auckland’s Downtown Programme was completed last week, with Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern in attendance to mark the occasion, Auckland Council announced. The six projects reflect an investment of $350 million by Auckland Transport and Auckland Council, $42 million of which was provided by the government. The programme created a generous and welcoming destination along the water’s edge that is recognisably Tāmaki Makaurau. The space is designed to strengthen people’s connection with the Waitematā Harbour.

West Auckland street left without water due to broken pipes

Residents in a West Auckland street are frustrated as they have been without running water for much of last week, due to broken pipes, TVNZ reports. Watercare is struggling to fix issues with its aging pipes infrastructure, and the ongoing works have caused headaches for commuters, with parts of the road being ripped up to allow access to the damaged sections of the pipe. A Watercare spokesperson says the issue has been "immediately escalated" as they continue investigating. A water tanker was set up on the side of Lavelle Road, with fresh bottles of water being dished out to residents affected.

Auckland woman Annie Chen serving home detention in $10m Remuera mansion for 'fraud'

Annie Chen was sentenced to nine months' home detention for defrauding $600,000 from property investors, but NZ Herald revealed she is serving home detention in a luxury $10 million Remuera mansion owned by Singapore-based businessman, Yifei Sheng. Chen was charged with obtaining by deceit after telling buyers in a Pokeno property development scheme they needed to pay $100,000 in cash, on top of the purchase price, as commission fees to ensure the deals went through. But a judge found she had illegally pocketed the money, motivated by greed.

Cars destroyed in Auckland street by fires

An investigation is underway after a number of cars were set alight in the early hours of Sunday morning on an Avondale street, NZ Herald reports. Three of the cars belong to one family, who are gutted that they now have no transport plus have bills to pay on property that has been incinerated. A member of the family stated: "I can't even describe the feeling... My poor family has suffered and some cowards have think they have accomplished something." A fourth car was burnt out near Mount Smart Stadium, but it is unclear if that incident was linked. Police confirmed they were making inquiries about the incident.

Auckland's Huia Water Treatment Plant approved due to 'public good', despite opposition

Resource consent has been granted to replace the nearly 100-year-old Huia Water Treatment Plant in West Auckland, Stuff reports, despite opposition from more than 470 submitters, including Auckland Council. Watercare's plan to replace the water plant includes earthworks and vegetation removal, stirring concerns among opposition as they believe it could cause adverse effects on the environment and risk spreading kauri dieback disease. However, Watercare says the plant replacement is “absolutely critical” for its customers, with the existing plant being built in 1928.

Covid-19: Crucial vaccine shipment arrives two day early

A crucial delivery of 150,000 Covid vaccines arrived in New Zealand two days early, NZ Herald reports. The shipment, which is the largest in this country to date of the Pfizer vaccine - arrived on Sunday afternoon, two days ahead of schedule. Prime Minister Jacinda Adern was relieved with the vaccines' arrival, as New Zealand had distributed nearly all of its vaccine supply, with all stock expected to have been used by Wednesday.
