New platform helps residents to get outdoors, explore and discover their surburb

According to Mayor Greg Williamson the inspiration for council’s newest free online resource, “Know Your Burb”, came from residents’ efforts to exercise during lockdown.

“There was a phenomenon, called ‘burbing’, that came out of COVID-19 lockdowns in 2020 when exercise options were restricted to residents’ home suburbs,” Mayor Williamson said.

“Rather than give up on staying fit, many people used restrictions as an excuse to explore and discover every available path, track, park, piece of exercise equipment or sporting facility in their home suburb,” he said.

Inspired by this wave of home turf discovery, council went to work creating a website that detailed the locations of all our assets in an easy-to-navigate, searchable online map.

Be transported to an uninhibited disco world

The idea of dancing your way through the streets of the Mackay City Centre, serenading diners and group-singing hit songs might not seem like everyone’s cup of tea – but give it a chance.

According to David Naylor (aka Guru Dudu), the Australian creator of Silent Disco Walking Tours, everything changes once you put the disco headphones on.

The Guru Dudu Silent Disco Walking Tours team are coming to Mackay for the Mackay Festival of Arts, with tours running July 16, 17 and 18.
