#SeeHowYouWillGrow

Well, here we are; unbelievably it’s July already!

Whilst there is much still to do before the end of term, for many, this month is about remembering and honouring those in the school community who are ‘moving on’. It might be pupils in the oldest year group; their parents and wider family members; staff leaving to take up a new job, or someone who is retiring.  It is a time of reflection and endings, as well as a time of anticipation and of change.

For some, the activities of the next few days will be especially poignant as they are being done ‘for the last time’. Leavers of any age will be reflecting on all they have learned, what they will be taking with them in their hearts and what they will miss.

Last Friday’s ‘Leavers Service’ (streamed from the DBE YouTube channel and available here to all until the end of term) told the story of the parable of the mustard seed. With the hashtag #SeeHowYouWillGrow, the story and prayers centre on how our Christian values go forward with us in life no matter how old we are. The spiritual experiences, conversations and opportunities for reflection remain with us and that for the youngest of children the most minuscule acts of kindness, courage and friendship can grow into something most marvellous as they take them forward into their lives.

So, as we step into this first full week of July, I encourage each of us to take a moment today, to think how we, through our small actions, positive thoughts, behaviours and words, have ‘fed’ those leaving our schools or workplaces through our interactions with them. How have we helped them to grow so that they are ready to spread their wings and follow their dreams? How have we encouraged them ‘to shine, shine so bright’? And, therefore, how have we helped to grow The Kingdom of Heaven here on Earth?

For all you have done that makes a difference to others, and for all you continue to do “Thank you”.

“He presented another parable to them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; and this is smaller than all other seeds, but when it is full grown, it is larger than the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and nest in its branches.” Matthew 13 31-32
