Financial Independence: Week 1

Good morning, afternoon, or evening,

Independence…

A word that has been tossed around in the last month. So let’s talk about it in the context of finances. I had to pull the definition from dictionary.com for independence.

Independence is defined as “not influenced or controlled by others in matters of opinion, conduct, etc.; thinking or acting for oneself:”

That is a pretty bold statement. To be independent, you are not to be influenced by anything. I can say with complete honesty that I am NOT financially independent by that definition. Before you exit out of this, hear me out. Do I make my own decisions? Yes. Am I controlled by others? No, I am my own person. Do others have an influence on my life? Most definitely. Financial independence is not being on the road by yourself. It is actively maximizing the information to make your life better. (Maybe by the end of the month we will create a new definition.)

Back to the newsletter....

What do I mean by that? Even as a coach, I am seeking wise counsel not only to make my life better but to serve you better. No one is completely independent. Even if you think you know it all you don’t. Let me help you gain or raise your financial independence. Over the next few weeks, I want to challenge you to reflect on where you are and where you want to be. Here are a few questions to think about.

  • Do I consider myself to be financially independent?
  • Do I find myself having to strategize to make ends meet each month?
    • (Are you robbing Peter to pay Paul?)
  • Do I seek out wise counsel to make better decisions?
  • Am I dependent on others to help me pay my necessary bills?
    • (Mortgage/rent, power, water, gas, or car note)
  • Have I been surprised by an unexpected bill that I should have known about?

When you grow in your financial independence, your confidence will grow. Stress levels will reduce and you will even sleep better. Let’s raise the bar on your independence this month and watch your life change for the better.

This week's challenge:
