#14 - Friday 15th October 2021
Hello. We are into the fifth year of the Opportunity Area programme - with this further year of funding announced back in May. A lot has happened since our last update, but work continues to support social mobility for children and young people across Scarborough, Whitby and Filey:
  1. We have started a new Glasses in Classes initiative to help children get their eyes tested and then get hold of glasses, where needed. 16 schools have said they would like to take part and we would like to hear from more

  2. There is a new network for Teaching Assistants to come together and access training. You can sign up to the network and/or attend their first ever conference in November.

  3. Sirius Minerals Foundation have funding for organisations to deliver activities so children and young people can spend time together having a fun experience or learn new skills. Grants are between £500 and £4,000 - apply before 31 October 2021. More details

  4. We have partnered with Two Ridings Community Foundation to fund projects that promote good mental health and wellbeing. The latest round of funding is available for projects up to £500, and up to £5,000. More details.

  5. Our work on recruitment has filled over 300 posts since 2018, with a large number of schools now funding this to continue. Have a look at the latest school and teaching vacancies. None of this would have been possible without the tenacity, expertise and distinctive charm of James Annetts, who is leaving us to go and work for the Dept for Education. We look forward to the project developing under the leadership of Garry Morrison. Thanks, and good luck, James #coastlifeisthebestlife.

  6. We have invested the most money in a project on student behaviour and their engagement with learning. Updates on this project, the impact and our plans for this year are provided on our website

  7. The DfE is providing additional funding through the National Tutoring Programme for targeted support for children and young people who have been most affected by the pandemic. We would like to hear from schools about the impact that this tutoring is having and how we can help further.

  8. Congratulations to all involved in another successful Science and Engineering Week.  We were pleased to be able to support a bit of maths magic as part of the event.

  9. In other news:
Until next time.
