This summer, the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) is monitoring water quality at Scotland’s 85 bathing waters and publishing the results on our website between June and mid September.
Our monitoring helps us understand the impacts on the quality of bathing water from the rivers that feed into them and other sources. Impacts from land use, waste water treatment, the weather and how visitors behave on the beach all affect bathing water quality throughout the summer.

Good quality bathing water encourages visitors, boosting local communities and businesses who rely on seasonal visitors for social and economic benefits and SEPA is committed, and working with partners, to achieve this.

Watch the animation to find out what factors affect the quality of our bathing waters.
Check water quality before using a bathing water
Visit the SEPA website to check the the annual bathing water classifications and, for 28 locations, you can also check the daily water quality predictions.

Improving the quality of our bathing waters
SEPA works with a range of partners to improve the quality of bathing waters. As part of this work we’re visiting farmers and land managers throughout the year to ensure compliance with good land use practices. Visit Farming Water Scotland to find out more about the practices that should be followed.

Visitors can help by:
  • Taking their litter home
  • Cleaning up after their dog
  • Not feeding the seagulls
SEPA is also supporting the Keep Scotland Beautiful (KSB) ‘My beach, Your beach’ campaign.
