July 2021 Update
Free Little Libraries are coming to Shawnee Evergreen!
The concept is simple: you leave a book or two that you don’t need anymore and borrow books that your neighbours have left. It’s a great way to encourage reading and community connectedness. 

You may have seen the library that our Board member, William Moysiuk built and installed at his home on Shawnee Drive. He tells us that people stop at his Little Library most days to pick up or drop off a book and that neighbours often stop and chat at the library. 

William is the "steward" for his library. Each of our new Little Libraries will cared for by a steward (caretaker).
 



Thanks to an ActivateYYC grant
we will construct and install 
5 Free Little Libraries.

Resident involvement is integral
to the success of this project. 

Read on to learn how YOU can
get involved. 

Our new libraries will include a small SECA message board. 
SECA residents are needed to: 
  • Join a committee that will: 
    • review and approve locations 
    • review and approve Steward applications
    • coordinate the project
  • Suggest potential locations
    • at your home
    • in a park
    • along a pathway
  • Cut the wood and assemble the Little Libraries **
    • We are partnering with the Kerby Centre, using their woodworking shop.
    • Kerby Centre's volunteer carpenters will  assist SECA volunteers.
    • No prior woodworking experience is required.
  • Become a 'Steward' of one of the libraries through an application process.
    • Stewards will encouraged to contribute to the building and painting (if possible) at an event (date TBD). 
    • Stewards will become the ongoing caretakers of their Free Little Library. 
  • Join our installation crew to "plant" the new Little Libraries.
  • Visit your local library to donate or choose a book as well as read the SECA updates. 
  • Celebrate!
** if you are creative and skilled in woodworking and you'd like to design and build your own library, connect with us as we may be able to pay for the materials.

Thanks to ActivateYYC for supporting SECA's Free Little Libraries project with a $3,000 grant! 

ActivateYYC started as a tactical urbanism microgrant initiative by the Federation of Calgary Communities (FCC). The grants aim to support volunteer-driven, tactical urbanism projects that engage the community and create meaningful changes to shared spaces. Communities and residents are invited to reimagine spaces across Calgary as places of greater activity and connectivity. 
Calgary Evergreen Community Association was awarded a Community Clean Up (CCU) event  by the City and SECA partnered in to host that event on June 27.

Thanks to the 13 SECA volunteers who worked in searing heat to make this highly valued event available to area residents. You are appreciated!

Could you help with Print Newsletters?

As you can tell from the irregularity of our insertions into the free print newsletters distributed by Great News Media to every home in our community, SECA needs a volunteer with a few hours a month to take on this task. Training and ongoing support would be provided.

Thanks for your patience as we upgrade our website and membership processes. For those who have joined since May 2021, we expect that your digital membership cards will be available in July. Stay tuned!

How to join:  Fill out the online form then choose a payment option. 
 
Payment Options:    
1) Drop-off or Mail (preferred to minimize our service fees)
Drop off your $20 payment in the mailbox at 715 Shawnee Drive SW, Calgary, AB T2Y 1V6. Or send by mail. Cheques preferred.
 
2) E-transfer
Complete the membership form online and pay by e-transfer to info@shawneeevergreen.ca.
 
3) Credit Card
One of the above payment options is preferred to avoid service fees to SECA but you may join online at 
Shawnee-evergreen.ca with a credit card.

The annual fee remains $20 per household.
Our membership cards have gone digital so they can be conveniently available on your phone. 
Print cards will continue to be an option via request to info@shawneeevergreen.ca. 
At the appropriate time you'll receive an email renewal reminder.
